REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE TOWN LIBRARY.

NATHANIEL F. BLAKE, DANIEL T. DEVINE,

Term expires 1894

NATHAN W. HEATH, S. F. BLODGETT, 1895

CHARLES A. DEWEY, BENJAMIN ADAMS, 1896

CHARLES A. DEWEY, Chairman.

S. F. BLODGETT, Secretary. NATHANIEL F. BLAKE, Librarian.

During the past year the Trustees have not been able to do much in the way of buying books for the Town Library, which now contains nearly nine thousand volumes. As the town was un- willing to make any extra appropriation for the printing of the supplementary catalogue, we were obliged to devote to that pur- pose almost all of the money usually spent in the purchase of new books. The new catalogue has now been printed at an expense of three hundred and twenty-five dollars, and in our opinion is well worth all it cost. It will add largely to the practical value of the library.

For some reason there has been quite a falling off in the amount received from the dog tax, which was nearly one hundred dollars less than that of the previous year. Consequently we have had less money with which to meet ordinary expenses than we had reason to expect, and for almost the first time we start on the new year somewhat in debt.

It is therefore highly important that a larger appropriation than usual should be made for the benefit of the Town Library the ensuing year.

CHARLES A. DEWEY,

Chairman.

Number of days open, 308. Average daily circulation, 8065. Amount received for fines, $61.87; for catalogues, $6.60. Num- ber of books covered, 1373. Number of notices sent delinquents, 32. The library contained, as per last report, 8869 volumes, the number added during the year, 89 volumes, making a total of 8958 volumes. Of the number added, 66 were by purchase, and 23 were donated.

On account of the expense of printing the new catalogue, the number of books added during the year was very small as compared with previous years, and the amount received from the dog tax be- ing much less than last year, leaves the library with several unpaid bills, the amount of the same being given in the Secretary's report.

With the increasing circulation, the appropriation should be sufficiently large to enable the Trustees to purchase a much larger number of new books the coming year, and to replace such vol- umes as have become worn out and therefore out of circulation.

All of which is respectfully submitted.

N. F. BLAKE,

Librarian.
