REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Progress in educational methods, as in everything else, is the order of the day, and very many of our best minds are trying to devise means to obtain better and uniform results. Our sys- tem should include the education of the head, heart and hand, and not the least part should be the heart, or moral nature, and this foundation should be laid in early life.
Our public schools should be as good as can be made. We cannot afford to allow them to be otherwise, and the Town should not be satisfied until it has the best attainable results.
In our system of graded schools very much depends upon the thoroughness of the work that has been done in the previous grade, as a part omitted or imperfectly done embarrasses the scholar in his whole course. In the lower grades we should have the best of teachers ; our primary and grammar grades should be thorough-not how much can be crammed into the mind, but to know as far as they go. Most of the scholars do not go beyond the grammar grades .. There are difficulties back of the Primary schools; the hometraining (or want of it) and inherited tenden- cies ; and how to remedy these is yet to be discovered.
The reports of the Secretary and Superintendent which accompany this, should be carefully read, which will show the work that has been done in the schools the past year. But few know the detail of work devolving upon a Superintendent. The ability and experience of our Superintendent and the good work that he is doing are duly appreciated . by your Committee. The reports of the teachers on Drawing, Music, and Gymnastics, you will find with the Superintendent's report. Please give them due consideration.
It is important that the Town should take a deeper interest in the public schools-one of the grandest institutions we have. There is nothing like them in the whole world; reaching to ull classes of our children, and to all free books and all other things in the educational course. To those who aspire to noble pur- poses of life the avenues are opened to them.
4
In the report of the School Committee last year, attention was called to the need of more school accommodation. This year it is still more needed. We had in May 1,293 scholars in Town between the ages of 5 and 15-an increase over last year, and it will continue to increase. We had on the school roll last year 1,524 scholars.
