CONCRETING.

For two years the work of concreting has been done by the Town, and we are strongly of the opinion that the work done has averaged better, and at less cost, than under the old method. During the year 6998 yards of concreting has been done, divided as follows: 5098 yards re-covering; 1287 yards new work, 613 yards cross-walks.

PAVING.

At an adjourned Town meeting held March 10, 1898, under Article 11 it was voted "That a committee of five be appointed to act with the Selectmen to make a report to the Town at some future time for the better system of repairing Main street. This committee has reported. See page 13 of Town Records in this report.

RAILROAD CROSSINGS.

In the report of last year the board called special atten- tion to the danger of several grade crossings, and since that

report was made, at the request of the Selectmen, the Boston & Albany railroad have caused a flagman to be placed at the Medway street railroad crossing, and the New York, New Haven & Hartford railroad have agreed to run and are run- ning their trains at a speed not greater than four miles an hour when crossing our Main street.

SAFETY OF PUBLIC RECORDS.

Since the recommendation of last year a new safe has been placed in the office of the Town Clerk, and the great liability of loss of valuable records in case of fire avoided.

SHADE TREES.

So much dead wood had been allowed to accumulate on our shade trees and in many places the foliage so interfered with a reasonable use of the highway as to be a source of danger, that we thought it advisable to have the trees trimmed somewhat carefully and thoroughly, and, as we think, a marked improvement has been made.

TOWN HALL.

The absolute necessity of remodeling the present Town Hall is so apparent as to be beyond question. Several years ago a committee was appointed and plans prepared showing what it seemed desirable to do, and the appearance of the building after completion. These plans have been before us, and with some minor changes seem to be very desirable. We earnestly recommend their consideration, and immediate favor- able action.

SEWAGE TANKS.

As a result of complaint made by one of our large manu- facturing establishments, as well as many private individuals, it was deemed advisable to call a special meeting to consider the matter of a better disposal of our sewage, and at this meeting an appropriation of $3000 was made. A contract was made for the construction of two sewage tanks, one on Central street near the head of Depot street, the other on Pond

33

street to take the deposit from the Main street sewer. That the solid matter that formerly entered directly into the stream is being collected is certain; whether the disagreeable odor, particularly noticeable in summer, is done away with, can only be determined after a longer test. If the tanks built prove of value as we expect, we recommend one or two more of smaller capacity to abate an additional nuisance.

FIRE WARDENS.

Following a plan successful in many towns, and after consulting with the Board of Engineers, the town has been divided into districts, and a number of persons selected to respond to alarms in their several districts, their duty being to protect property. We are of the opinion that the wisdom of this action will commend itself to the public.

BENJAMIN T. CLANCY, GEORGE P. COOKE, ABBOTT A. JENKINS,

Selectmen of Milford.
