WILKINSON, ARTHUR L., 66
17, died at Utuado,P. R.,
Sept. 1, of typhoid fever.
The company was called into the service of the United States by proclamation of the President, dated April 23, 1898; went to South Framingham May 6, where the numerical strength was increased from 58 men and 3 officers to 74 men and 3 officers, who were mustered into the service of the United States as Co. M, 6th Mass. Inf., United States Vols., on May 13. On May 20 the regiment left South Framingham for Camp Russell A. Alger, Falls Church, Va., stopping en route at Baltimore, Md., by invitation of the mayor and citi- zens, who tendered it an ovation in contradistinction to the re- ception given the Old Sixth on April 19, 1861. Camp Russell A. Alger was reached on Sunday morning, May 21, the regi- ment having spent the previous night on the cars.
. The strength of the company was again increased by the ad- dition of 32 men. Maj. Darling, battalion commander, having been detailed to recruit for his battalion, came to Milford on June 17 and mustered in 28 men, four places being left open for musicians, who were enlisted in Boston. The total strength of the company was now 106 men and 3 officers.
Camp was broken on July 5, and the regiment proceeded to Dunn Loring, Va., and took cars for Charleston, S. C., ar- riving on the 7th. Went aboard the U. S. S. "Yale" on the following day, and, General Miles having arrived during the night, the vessel sailed on the morning of July 9 for Cuba, ar- riving off Siboney the 12th. The troops did not disembark on account of suspension of hostilities under a flag of truce. For several days the "Yale" cruised about between Siboney and Santiago harbor, until the surrender of the city and province, when she steamed for Guantanamo Bay.
An expedition against Porto Rico was here organized, and
45
sailed for that island on July 21, arriving at Guanica on the 25th, when a landing was made, the company having been aboard ship seventeen days. On the same evening Co. M, with Co. L of the 6th Mass. Inf., was ordered on outpost duty, at a point about three miles inland, close to the Spanish lines. About 1 o'clock A. M. the company sustained a sharp attack at close range from the Spaniards, who then kept up a desultory firing until nearly daybreak. At daybreak five other compa- nies of the regiment came up. Five of the seven companies, including M, formed in column, preparatory to forming for at- tack, and proceeded along the road. Having gained a distance of about two hundred yards, a heavy volley from the enemy in concealment upon a hill to our left passed harmlessly over the heads of our troops. Advantage was taken of the cover afforded by an open surface drain or ditch by the roadside, and the fire promptly and vigorously returned with considera- ble effect. The two remaining companies advanced to flank the enemy on their right, when a general charge by all the companies forced them to retire over the hill, when they re- treated in the direction of Yauco. Some troops were left to hold the ground should the enemy attempt to re-take it, and the company went back into camp at Guanica. The action of the company in its trying position during the attack at night and in the general engagement the following day was most commendable, maintaining the high standard accorded the American volunteers throughout the war.
At 1 o'clock on the afternoon of the 28th the commanding officer of the company received orders to report with his com- pany and bull-carts for carrying supplies, stores, etc., to Gen- eral Garrettson at 3 o'clock, when orders were given to proceed with Co. H, 6th Ill. Inf., U. S. V., under Major Clark to Yanco. The town was reached in the evening, the troops be- ing received with manifest rejoicing by its people. The Span- ish troops having evacuated the place previously, camp was pitched outside the barracks formerly used by them, and in the morning the flag was raised on the public building, the alcalde welcoming the Americans in a fervid speech and the local band playing several airs.
Gen. Garrettson's brigade having come up on the 30th the
46
company rejoined the regiment, and the following morning the march to Ponce was taken up. Passing through Penuellas and arriving at Tallaboa, camp was pitched for the night, about twelve miles having been covered.
In the morning the march was resumed, Ponce being reached in the afternoon of August 1. The company was sta- tioned here with the regiment until the ninth of August, when the march through the interior was begun, the company in command of Lieut. Smith, the commanding officer being in command of the 2d battalion, Major Darling in command of the regiment; three field officers, including the colonel, having resigned at Ponce on August 3. Col. Rice joined the regiment on the 10th of August and assumed command.
The march across the country was over very mountain- ous, rough, and muddy roads. Two camps were pitched before reaching Adjuntas on the 11th. Adjuntas was left on the 14th, and Utuado reached on the same day. Word having been received that a peace protocol had been signed, the regi- ment was held here doing garrison duty and furnishing guards for plantations. Co. M remained in Utuado until Oct. 15, when it marched to Arecibo on the way to San Juan, where it arrived on the 18th to take transport for Boston.
The transport "Mississippi," carrying the regiment, left San Juan on the 21st and arrived at Boston on the 27th, the company coming to Milford the same day, where it re- ceived an ovation from the townspeople. The company was on leave of absence until Nov. 3, and on general furlough from that date to Jan. 2, 1899, when it went on duty in the local armory to the date of mustering out of the regiment, Jan. 21, 1899. The company was paid and mustered out at South Framingham.
