In presenting the annual report of the Selectmen, several matters seem worthy of special mention.
CONCRETING BY THE TOWN.
Early in the year a number of proposals were received for concreting at prices from 50 to 55 cents a square yard, and in fact the competition was so earnest that it was thought possi- ble to do our own work, and lay more square yards of concrete for the same amount than could otherwise be done. That this was the result we feel confident. During the summer 1455 square yards of crosswalk and 1412 square yards of sidewalk were laid, a total of 2867 square yards, and at a cost not ex- ceeding 40 cents a square yard, and this price includes 100 patches that would usually cost an average of 35 cents each. The quality of the work done, will, we think, compare more than favorably with the work done by contractors in former years.
POLICING.
The general litter of our main thoroughfare seemed to de- mand more attention, during the summer months, than had formerly been paid to it, and as a result it was deemed advisa- ble to employ a man whose time should be used in keeping Main street, through the center of the town, and some of its immediate approaches, in a more sightly and cleanly condition, and we think the result obtained has justified the moderate expense necessary.
TOWN CLERK.
Through the neglect of the Clerk elected at the last annu- al meeting to attend to his duties, it was found necessary to appoint a successor, and this was done in the person of a former incumbent of the office, who was thoroughly familiar with the duties of the office, who had and has given excellent satisfaction, and fully justified the confidence reposed in hin.
RAILROAD CROSSINGS.
A number of dangerous grade crossings exist, and where the travel seemed to demand still greater precaution, an effort
34
has been made to lessen the danger. The Boston & Albany R. R. have been requested to cause a flagman to be placed at the Medway street railroad crossing, and the N. Y., N. H. & H. R. R. to locate and maintain a gate at the Main street crossing of their road.
SAFETY OF PUBLIC RECORDS.
The absolute worthlessness of the safe in the office of the Town Clerk for the protection of valuable books, papers, re- cords of personal property, mortgages, etc., from fire is well known, and your board earnestly recommend the purchase of a suitable safe for the better protection of the town property. In addition to a new safe we would call the attention of the voters to the need of fasteners at both top and bottom of the doors leading into the vault, which, with this weakness reme- died, we are of the opinion would be absolutely fire-proof. An expenditure of less than fifty dollars would be a guarantee against loss of the books of the Assessors, and the many re- cord books and papers of the town for many years.
STREET RAILWAY CENTRE.
The connection of Milford with three of the immediately adjoining towns by street railways, and the prospect of the early completion to three more are a matter for congratulation to the town and its business interests, and we recognize this as a healthy and desirable movement to be encouraged under proper and suitable restrictions.
BENJAMIN T. CLANCY, GEORGE S. WHITNEY, GEORGE P. COOKE,
Selectmen of Milford.
