During the voting the ballot-box was opened by the unan- imous consent of the moderator and Town Clerk for the pur- pose of taking out, sorting and counting the ballots. First at 10.08 A. M., when it registered 454; then at 11.35 A. M., when it registered 755; at 12.30 P. M. the ballots stuck in the box, and the moderator took charge of ballots cast (8 ballots); box opened at 1.50 p. M. registered 1419; box opened at 4.40 P. M. registered 1788, and at the close of polls, when the box regis- tered 1848.

In pursuance to a vote passed at the annual Town meet- ing, held March 7, 1898, the inhabitants of the Town of Mil- ford met in the Town Hall, and proceeded to act upon the va- rious articles in the warrant.
The meeting was called to order by L. E. Fales, modera- tor.
The warrant was then read by the Town Clerk.

Voted: That the Treasurer be and is hereby authorized to borrow money at any time during the municipal year in various amounts not exceeding fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) in all, and give the negotiable notes of the town therefor, payable within one year from the date of their incur- rence, the same to be paid out of the taxes assessed for the year 1898.
Article 7. Voted: That the taxes become due Sept. 10, and that all taxes paid on or before that time shall be dis- counted 2} per cent, and that one half of one per cent per month be added to all taxes not paid by Sept. 10, and that the Collector be authorized to use all means of collecting taxes which a Town Treasurer when appointed Collector may use.
Voted: That the Collector be paid for collecting the first seven tenths of the taxes committed to him one half of one per cent; for the next two tenths, one per cent, and for the re- maining one tenth, five per cent of all taxes collected or abated.

Article 9. Voted: That the Selectmen be authorized to take charge of all legal proceedings for or against the Town.
Article 10. Voted: That the Selectmen be authorized to enforce payment of all taxes unpaid prior to 1893.
Article 11. Voted: That a committee of five be appointed to act with the Selectmen to make a report to the town at some future time for the better system of repairing Main street. Put to a hand vote, Yes 75, No 11.

Rhodes the mortgagee of said premises, on payment by him of the amount due said Town andinterest, whatever interest it may have acquired un- der and by virtue of a tax deed from Monroe A. Goldsmith et al to said Town dated Oct. 31, 1896, and recorded with Worcester District Deeds, book 1520, page 639.
Article 17. Voted: That the Overseers of the Poor be au- thorized to shingle the buildings at the Poor Farm, and ap- propriate $400 for same.
Article 18. Voted: That the Selectmen be instructed to locate an electric light at some suitable place on North Bow street, and appropriate $100 for the same.
Article 19. Voted: That the Town repair Beaver street from Norcross Bros.' sheds on East Main street to the Med- way road, and appropriate $300 for the same.
Article 20. Voted: To build a concrete sidewalk on the easterly side of Sumner street, and appropriate $500 for the same.

Moved: To reconsider the vote whereby we voted to pass over Article 12. Lost.

COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS.

To either Constable of the Town of Milford, in said County, Greeting:
In the name of the Commonwealth aforesaid, you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of said Town, qualified by law to vote in elections and in Town affairs, to meet at the Town Hall in said Town, on Tuesday, the eighth day of November, A. D. 1898, it being the first Tuesday after the first Monday, punctually at six o'clock in the forenoon, at which time the polls will be opened for said voters to give in their ballots to the Selectinen of said Town for Governor, Lieutenant-Governor, Councilor (Seventh Councilor District), Secretary, Treasurer and Receiver-General, Auditor and Attor- ney-General of the Commonwealth, a Senator for the Fifth Worcester Senatorial District, and two Representatives for the Tenth Worcester District, to the General Court of Massachu- setts, one Representative in the Fifty-sixth Congress of the United States (for the Eleventh Congressional District), and one District Attorney (Middle District), one Sheriff, one County Commissioner, two Special Commissioners, one Regis-

ter of Probate and Insolvency for said County of Worcester, all on one ballot designating the office intended for each person voted for. The polls may be closed at four o'clock in the af- ternoon on said day of meeting.
At 2 o'clock in the afternoon on the above mentioned eighth day of November at the same place, there will be a meeting of the above described inhabitants to act upon the fol- lowing articles, namely :-
Article 1. To choose a moderator to preside at said meet- ing.
Article 2. To see if the Town will accept the list of jurors as reported by the Selectmen.
Article 3. To see if the Town will authorize the Treas- urer to use any unexpended appropriations or funds in his hands unappropriated, to pay the expenses of the Town under Chapter 440 of Acts of 1890, and highways, or take any action in relation to paying said expenses.
Article 4. To see if the Town will accept and allow the report of the Selectmen on the laying out, grading and exten- sion of Beach street from Central street, 767 feet to a point at or near house owned by Peter Hickey, or take any action in relation thereto.
Article 5. To see if the Town will accept and allow the report of the Selectmen on the re-laying and grading of Pros- pect street from Main to Water street, or take any action in relation thereto.
Article 6. To see if the Town will vote to locate an elec- tric light and build a sidewalk on northerly side of Pleasant street, and appropriate money for the same, or take any action in relation thereto.
Article 7. To see if the Town will vote to increase the pay of the Assessors to $3.50 per day for each Assessor, or take any action in relation thereto.
And you are hereby directed to serve this warrant by posting up attested copies thereof at each of the Public Meet- ing Houses and at the Post-Office in said Town; also cause an

attested copy to be published in the Milford Daily News, Mil- ford Daily Journal, Milford Gazette and Milford Times, news- papers printed in said Town, two Sabbaths at least before the time set for said meeting.
Hereof fail not, and make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon, to the Clerk of said Town, at the time of meeting aforesaid.

TOWN MEETING, NOVEMBER 8, 1898.

Milford, November 8, 1898.
In pursuance to the foregoing warrant, the inhabitants of the Town of Milford, qualified by law to vote in elections and in Town affairs, met in the Town Hall in said Town on Tues- day, the eighth day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight, and were called to order by the Town Clerk, who then read the warrant and the officer's return thereon.
In accordance with the provisions of Chap. 548 of the Acts of 1898, the sealed package said to contain 2700 ballots, specimen ballots, and cards of instructions, was delivered to B. T. Clancy, the presiding election officer. The seal was then publicly broken, the package opened, and the blocks of ballots delivered to the ballot-clerks and their receipts therefor given to the Town Clerk, and one of each kind of cards of instruc- tions posted in each voting compartment, and five specimen ballots and five of each of the cards of instructions were post- ed in the hall outside the rail.
The ballot-box required by law to be used in elections was then opened in public meeting and shown to be empty. The register of the box was then set at 0000 and the box locked, and the keys thereof delivered to Oliver D. Holmes, Constable in attendance at said meeting.
S. C. Sumner and D. J. Sullivan, appointed inspectors by the Selectmen, acted as ballot-clerks, and during their absence S. Alden Eastman and M. G. Lynch, deputy inspectors, acted in their stead, each of them having been sworn to faithfully perform the duties of their office by the Town Clerk.
P. H. Curran, who had been appointed by the Selectmen to check the list at the polls, was duly sworn to faithfully per- form the duties of his office by the Town Clerk.

Selectmen of Milford.
Voted: To accept the list of jurors as reported by the Selectmen.
Voted: That the remaining articles in the warrant be laid on the table until 4.30 P. M.
At 4.30 p. M. the remaining articles in the warrant were taken up, and acted upon as follows, viz .:---
Article 3. Voted: That the Treasurer be authorized to use any unexpended appropriations or funds in his hands towards paying the expenses under Chap. 440, Acts of 1890, and highways.
Article 4. Voted: To accept and allow the report of the Selectmen on the laying out of the extension of Beach street, and that $150 be appropriated to carry out said report.
Article 5. Voted: To accept the report of the Selectmen on the re-laying of Prospect street.
Voted: To pass over the remainder of the article.
Article 6. Voted: To locate an electric light and to build a sidewalk on the northerly side of Pleasant street, and to ap- propriate $200 for the same.

Article 7. Voted: To increase the pay of the Assessors to $3.50 per day for each Assessor.
During the voting the ballot-box was, by the unanimous consent of the Selectmen and Town Clerk, opened four times for the purpose of taking out the ballots and sorting and count- ing the same.
First at 9.30 A. M., when it registered 406; then at 11 A. M., when it registered 621; then at 1.05 p. M., when it registered 1068; then at 3 p. M., when it registered 1400; and again at the close of the polls (4.30 P. M.), when the box registered 1571.
The ballot-box agreed with the number of names checked at the polls.
The names of those on the list of voters both at the polls and at the table of the ballot-clerks, which had been checked and audibly counted, were found as follows :-
