REPORT OF TREE WARDEN.
Number of trees set out and planted, 175
Number of trees trimmed, 125
Number of trees mulched, 100
Number of trees replaced, I2
The trees were set out in different parts of the town, the greater number being on street leading to North Scituate Beach, some in the west, and the remainder in and around Scituate Harbor. The work has been a great deal more pleasant this year than last, very few found fault with trim- ming trees; while nobody ever finds fault with setting them out. There is still quite a number of trees to be trimmed, and room for hundreds to be set out. And so do I hope, (not for any financial benefit to myself, or to whoever may be Tree Warden) that the Town will show as liberal a dis- position in the future, as they have in the past two years, and raise fifty cents per head for each poll in town. Then af- ter a few years, (say five or six) when the trees get a good start, we will begin to see and appreciate the beauty of them, and the good results that have come. back to us, for la- bor and money expended. Who does not like to talk about the trees ? That in early days they should have been made objects of worship is not so strange. James Russell Lowell deemed it a sort of irreligion in a man who did not love trees. He wrote, I willingly confess to so great a partiality for trees as tempts me to respect a man in exact proportion as he respects them. I will say. show me a man's place, and according to the size of it, (if not to near
-57-
the seashore, or salt water) I can tell what sort of a man he is by the number of trees on it. History is more or less as- sociated with trees. They mark the boundary lines be- tween tribes and nations. Great events in the lives of men and nations have taken place beneath them. Lee sur- rendered to Gen. Grant under a tree. Washington planted some beautiful ash trees at Mt. Vernon, which are still among the best of the memorials admired and respected there. Massachusetts began the celebration of arbor day by planting and covering the barren areas of Cape Cod with 10,000 acres of trees, which have now become thriving forests. In 1886 the governor of this state and mayor of Boston walked out on the Common where once stood two whipping posts and planted two twin elms. Massachusetts has a state law forbidding the defacement of trees, and the disfigurement of trees in anyway whatever is made a punishable offence. Now, there have been a few places where young and mis- chievous children have broken off young trees, and so I would ask, and suggest, that all parents, guardians and teachers in the public schools, instruct the children who are under their care and charge, not to cut, deface, break off, or swing around any of the young trees, lately set out.
WM. H. BURKE,
Tree Warden.
TO THE TREE.
A traveller on the dusty road Strewed acorns on the lea; And one took root and sprouted up, And grew into a tree.
Love sought its shade, at evening time, To breathe his early vows;
And age was pleased, in heats of noon,
To bask beneath its boughs;

The dormouse loved its dangling twigs, ' The birds sweet music bore; It stood a glory in its place, A blessing evermore.
