For the support of the department the ensuing year, we most respectfully recommend the sum of six hundred (600) dollars for the four (4) hose companies. We also recom- mend a gun and life-net as required by law.

Also, that a combination wagon be purchased and lo- cated in Hose House No. 3 at North Scituate. Also a house be built for Hose .Company No. 4 at North Scituate Beach, where a large amount of valuable property is lo- cated, and for the safety of which the protection is entirely inadequate.

-89-

We also recommend that each hose company be supplied with suitable ladders and fire extinguishers.

There are at present one hundred and two (102) hy- drants, for which the Town is paying annual rental, and which will be a useless expenditure of money unless utilized for fire purposes, and as the number of buildings is yearly increasing the necessity for a thoroughly organized and equipped fire department will be more keenly felt.

Very respectfully,

A. A. SEAVERNS, Chicf.

J. A. WARD,

F. W. LITCHFIELD, Clerk. JOHN B. DAMON, JOHN F. TURNER.

REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH.

To the Selectmen and Toren Citizens :

This being the fourth year of an independent Board of Health for the Town, and also marking some advancement, it was deemed advisable to explain to the citizens what progress and what work has been done.

After the March meeting of 1905, the Board met and organized, Mr. Fred Cole being the new member.

Mr. Allen was unanimously elected Chairman having al- ways, since the formation of the Board, acceptably filled that position.

At the Town meeting in March, two hundred and fifty dollars was appropriated for a sewer pump and suitable wag- on. the same to be expended by the Board of Health.

Upon investigation the Board, after thoroughly looking into the matter, found this entirely inadequate to procure what in their opinion was the proper equipment, conse- quently a new Edison Pump with hose and wrenches was obtained, leaving the question of wagon an undecided mat- ter.

In July we were enabled to purchase a regular sanitary wagon, which had been in use a comparatively short time, and had the same put in first class condition, thereby fur- nishing the Town with an equipment in every respect equal to the five hundred and forty-five dollar Edison Outfit, and in so doing only exceeding the appropriation by about six- teen dollars.

This apparatus was put in commission in August under the care of Mr. Cole, and can be obtained at any time for cleaning cesspools and like work.

-104-

The Board has had several complaints in regard to drain- age, and they have required cesspools to be constructed, and the owners have taken measures to meet the requirements.

We wish to call the attention of the citizens to the sani- tary condition at North Scituate Beach.

Every summer there are more or less complaints made of people dumping garbage and refuse matter in objectionable places, and when their attention is called to the matter the same question is invariably asked: "Where shall we dump it?"

Now, with the increasing population and the construction of new houses it is only proper that some provision should be made and a public dump furnished, and by so doing we may at some time avoid a large amount of sickness, and pos- sibly an epidemic.

It is to be hoped that some action may be taken in this matter at the next Town meeting.

What contagious diseases have occurred in Town the past year have fortunately been confined to the original locations.

In one case it was deemed advisable to have one of the schools closed for a day that the building might be thor- oughly fumigated.

The above may serve in a slight way to show some of the work performed the past year.

Respectfully, THOS. H. FARMER, Sec.
