TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The Trustees submit the following report: The board reorganized April 21st, 1900. They have to report the continued usefulness and prosperity of the library. They very much regretted to lose the ser- vices of Mrs. Sara F. Towne, who had served the town faithfully and acceptably, for several years, as librarian, and resigned, as she was to leave town, but were fortunate to secure as her successor, Miss Annie Kinsley, who has performed the duties of that office since July 1st in a satisfactory manner, and has been engaged for another year.
The books were examined Feb. 7th, current, and were all accounted for, and in satisfactory condition. The library was reopened Saturday Feb. 9th, 1901.
During the past year one copy of the Annals of Mendon was turned over to the superintendent of schools, and one copy exchanged for a his- tory of the town of Canton, Mass.
The thanks of the citizens are tendered to all who have contributed books, magazines or literature of any kind to the library during the past year.
The trustees recommend the appropriation of one hundred and seventy-five dollars for the use of the library the ensuing year.
JULIUS A. GEORGE, HORACE C. ADAMS, ELMER E. SHERMAN, LIBERTY FREEMAN, FRANK H. WOOD.

Your committee very much regret that the cost of this build- ing exceeded the appropriation. They strove earnestly to plan a building that would be satisfactory to the town and comply with the requirements of the State Inspector of Buildings, for the sum voted, but found they could not do so. The time wasted in this vain endeavor, accounts for the delay in commencing construc- tion. We hope our work will meet the approval of our fellow citizens.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORT.
TO THE CITIZENS OF THE TOWN OF MENDON :
The following report of the School Committee is respect- fully submitted.
The care of school property was assigned as follows : North, Leonard E. Taft ; Albeeville and West, Frank H. Wood ; South, East and Center, Erwin A. Snow.
This year, as in former years, our report is made out two weeks before the close of the year; the pay of teachers, janitors and for transportation of scholars for these two weeks we have not given in detail, but have included the amount we have reason to expect it will be in this report, thus giving the cost of the schools for a full year.
During the year new seats and floors have been put in the primary and grammar rooms. With the exception of a few slight repairs these rooms are now in as good condition as we can make them unless there is a general remodelling of the whole building. The School Committee still has bills on hand unpaid to the amount of about $110 for furnishing the new school house at the East. It will be necessary to make provision for paying these at the annual meeting by an addition of $100 to the regular ap- propriation.
The new school building was finished and used for the first time Jan. 3, 1901. The school committee and those interested are much pleased with it. It is a good looking modern building, well built, of good material, well heated, lighted, and ven- tilated and will probably meet the wants of that part of the town for some years to come.
As this part of the town now has electric cars passing through it and directly by the school house, people riding by will get a very much better impression of the town now than with the old building. Almost any one looking for a place to live will buy more readily and pay more for a home in a neighborhood where there is a good school building than in one that has a poor one, and the increase in valuation of real estate in that part of the town by having a good school building will probably make the building of this one a good investment for the town, aside from the direct benefit to the school.
Much credit is due the chairman of the Building Committee,
4
Mr. George, for the interest he has taken and the time and labor expended by him in the construction of this building.
We would respectfully refer you to the annexed report of the Superintendent of Schools, which the committee at its last meeting voted to accept and have printed.
We would recommend an appropriation of twenty- nine hun- dred dollars for schools for the ensuing year.
