TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY.
Your trustees are glad to be able to report a marked improve- ment in the condition of your library both within and without since our last report. This renovation has emphasized what was already apparent, namely, the need of more shelf room. This need has been met in part by the purchase of some sec- tional book cases in which will be placed the new books as they are received. It being the unanimous opinion of book binders and librarians that a cover shortens the life of a book rather than lengthens it, it is suggested that the new books be placed in the new cases without cover. This we trust will greatly facilitate the ready choice of our patrons who desire to constantly read the new.
Another and a rapidly growing need is a new catalogue. While the books are catalogued by departments for the most part, there is no up to date catalogue of any one department. This greatly hinders the search for a particular book, as many small blank books must be examined ere the book is discovered. It is desirable that a complete card catalogue, similar to that found in the most modern libraries, be commenced the coming year.
It is with regret that your trustees report the resignation of Mrs. Annie E. Barnes as librarian. The courtesy and skill with which she has performed her work merit the highest commenda- tion. Our regret is somewhat tempered by the fact that we are enabled to announce that Miss Annie W. Gaskill has been secured as librarian for the coming year. Her previous experi- ence in the position is sufficient warrant that the work will be well done.
