TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE

TRUSTEES OF THE TAFT PUBLIIC LIBRARY.

TO THE CITIZENS OF MENDON: The Trustees of the Taft Public Library herewith present their twenty-fifth annual report.

For some time there has been a growing demand for an up to date catalogue, Each year's additions to the number of books has but emphasized the need of a re-classification. This work has been begun during the past year. Several departments have already been classified, and those remaining will be catalogued according to the new system as time and money permit. In this connection it should be stated that the balance shown by the account of the treasurer will have been spent in carrying on this work before the March town meeting and therefore cannot be called a balance for next year.

In the process of cataloguing, the covers will be removed from the books and the patrons will be permitted to go to the shelves and select their books for themselves, subject to such restrictions as may be found necessary. This freedom should lead to an increased use of the library, as much time will be saved in selecting a book, and the patrons will find by observa- tion, many books on the shelves which they have overlooked in the several printed and written catalogues. While it is expected that a large proportion of the books issued will be fiction, the trustees would call attention to the fact that the departments of history, travel, and biography are being added to each year, and would urge the increased use of these books by the readers of Mendon.

The trustees wish to tender thanks to those who have pre- sented books to the library during the year.

We also wish to thank Miss Gaskill for her efficient services and take pleasure in announcing her reappointment for next year.

2I

We would recommend an appropriation of two hundred and fifty dollars for the coming year.

Respectfully submitted,

ERWIN A. SNOW, HORACE C. ADAMS, GEORGE TAFT, FRANK H. WOOD,

HERBERT F. TAYLOR,

Trustees Taft Public Library.
