WARN CHILDREN AGAINST SEX OFFENDERS Tell your children not to be friendly toward strangers and to

55

shun any advances that may be made toward them. Girls should be warned not to accept rides from strangers under any circum- stances. Report license plate numbers of those who try "pick ups."

Instruct your children not to play in the street, to look both ways before crossing, when riding his or her bicycle to ride on the right side of the street and in single file, and if walking where there are no sidewalks, do the same as when riding a bike.

I sincerely express my thanks and appreciation to the Select- men and all other departments for their invaluable assistance in helping us to carry out our duties.

To the members of the department, thanks for your co-opera- tion and untiring efforts to make West Bridgewater a safer and better place in which to live.

Respectfully submitted, DOUGLAS EATON, SR. Chief of Police

The number of stray dogs is increasing every year and if everyone would take care in properly securing the tag on their dog's collar

* The Trustees were saddened by the loss of Miss Jane Bartlett who passed away on August 2, 1957. Miss Bartlett had been a mem- ber of the Trustees of the West Bridgewater Public Library since 1943 and had served as Secretary since 1945. The Trustees at their December 1957 meeting voted to include in this record their regret

58

at the loss of Miss Bartlett with an expression of deep appreciation for her many years of interest and valuable service for the Trustees and for the West Bridgewater Public Library.

LIBRARY REPORT FOR 1957

To the Trustees of the West Bridgewater Public Library:

Report for the year ending December 31, 1957.

The librarians have had a busy year, with several extra projects. Beginning the last of June, and continuing until September, we adopted a summer schedule of hours: Wednesdays from 2 until 8 and Saturdays from 1 until 6. Winter hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 until 4; Wednesdays from 10 until 6 and Satur- days from 1 until 6. During the year we added 27 adult and 72 juvenile names to our list of patrons.

The staff attended the annual meeting of the Old Colony Library Club, held this June in Hingham, Mass. This organization is composed of librarians in the Old Colony District (32 libraries) and many ideas are exchanged and the speakers are people in the library field of work.

During the school term 146 pupils in the elementary grades earned their 5 book state certificate; 13 earned the large one for reading 20 books; books recommended by their teachers or the librarians. During a 6" grade assembly in June the staff was a guest at the school and had the pleasure of presenting the certificates; the pupils, in turn, presented gifts of books to the library.

During National Book Week in November, we had over one hundred new juvenile books ready for circulation. Several teachers, including a local kindergarten teacher, brought their classes to the library and loaned posters for display made by the pupils.

In June we had a display depicting the voyage of the Mayflower II, from the time of its building in England until its arrival at Plymouth, Mass. This material has been assembled in a

59

scrap-book and will be added to from time to time until the little ship is permanently berthed in Plymouth.

Several of our popular magazines have discontinued publica- tion and we have replaced them by others. Under improvements we added a new window screen, new piping for the furnace and calking on the foundation of the building.

In the Spring the librarian invited Mrs. George Galick, di- rector and Miss Alice Cahill, supervisor of field service, Massa- chusetts Dept. of Education, Dept. of Library Extension, to meet with the committee appointed to survey the town's library facilities. The consultants met at the library with Mr. Kenneth Buker, chair- man of the library survey committee; members Mr. Warren Ander- son, Mrs. John Howe, Miss Jean Murdock and trustees Miss Jane Bartlett and Mrs. Dorothy Freeman. It is a very thorough report and is on file at the library; it concludes by stressing the importance of a public library in a community. A report of the survey commit- tee was given at the March town meeting. Our growing need is still expansion.

The staff was saddened by the sudden death of our trustee, Miss Jane Bartlett, in August.

Under personnel we had the resignation of Miss Jane Fove and in her place Miss Ruth Staples was appointed. These high school girls are a great help during the busiest hours.

We appreciate the helpfulness of our trustees and the well wishes of our patrons. We thank the many who have donated books and periodicals.

Respectfully submitted,

JEAN M. MURDOCK,

Librarian
