Section 11-4 relative to "Partitions," be amended by striking out paragraph "(b) Stores in Blocks" and insert- ing in place thereof the following: (b) Stores. The ceiling of every store shall be finished with metal lath and Port- land cement mortar, or the equivalent. Section 11-8 relative to "Roof Structures and Roof- ing" under "Roof Coverings" be amended by inserting after paragraph "(d) Repairs to Shingle Roofs," the fol- lowing: (e) No new roofing material shall be laid over an existing roofing material except where the roof construc- tion under same is sound and the additional roofing ma- terial will not stress the structure beyond that provided in Div. 8 of this code. (f) All shingles on roofs shall be laid so as to give practically three thicknesses of shingles at every point on the roof. The Inspector of Buildings may approve shingles laid in variation of the above method when it can be shown that the shingles are specifically designed by the manufacturers to be laid in a different manner and, that when so laid they will insure weather tightness of roof.

Voted: (Unanimously) That
Section 11-9 relative to "Fire Stopping," be amended, by adding at the end thereof the following: (k) Sprinklers. Automatic sprinklers shall be installed in the cellar or base- ment of any building utilized in whole or in part as a boarding or lodging house, hospital, nursing home, or for any similar purpose, unless constructed of first class con- struction. The Inspector of Buildings may require the installation of automatic sprinklers in the cellar or base- ment of any existing building used as a boarding or lodging house, hospital, nursing home or for any similar purpose, when a serious fire hazard exists therein.
Voted: (Unanimously) That
Division 12 relative to "Heating Appliances and Chimneys" under the heading "Chimneys" be amended, by striking out paragraph "(g)" and inserting in place thereof the following: (g) Height of Chimneys. Every chimney shall be carried to sufficient height to protect adjoining buildings from fire and smoke. All chimneys constructed within eight feet of the ridge of the roof must be built at least two (2) feet higher than the ridge, and all chimneys over eight feet from the ridge must be at least level with the ridge. The Inspector of Buildings may modify the height of chimneys above the roof in specific cases where it is evident that the relative height between ridge and top of chimney does not affect the draft in chimney or in any way increase the fire hazard.

Mr. Hart offered the following substitute motion: That
Section 15-2 relative to Plumbing Permits, be amended, by adding at the end of the first paragraph the following: Permits to perform plumbing shall be issued only to Master Plumbers and Journeymen Plumbers, resi- dents of Arlington, who have registered their names and places of business with the Inspector of Buildings.
The above was amended by striking out the words "Residents of Arlington."
On a rising vote, Messrs. McManus, Donovan and Washburn acting as tellers, 61 voting in the affirmative and 86 in the negative, the Moderator declared the motion lost.
On the motion to amend as recommended by the Finance Committee 73 arose in the affirmative and 80 in the negative and the Moderator declared the motion lost.

Section 15-3 relative to quality and weights of plumb- ing material, be amended by adding at the end thereof the following: The Inspector of Plumbing may issue special permits for the use of seamless hard drawn copper tubing assembled with copper fittings for drain, soil, waste and vent pipes. All copper fittings of the sweated sleeve type shall have joints prepared by a thorough cleaning and sweated by capillary action to the full depth of the socket, to make a complete solder sweated contact between pipe and fitting. Section 15-12 relative to "Refrigerator, Safe and Spe- cial Wastes" under "Refrigerator Wastes" in the third paragraph, be amended by striking out "312 feet" and inserting in place thereof "4 feet" and inserting after the word "feet" the words "and not less than three (3) feet" so that said paragraph shall read as follows: Refrigerator waste lines shall discharge over an open, trapped and ventilated ordinarily used sink, connected with water supply for flushing and placed not more than 4 ft. and not less than 3 feet above the cellar floor. No ventilation is required for traps of refrigerators if located on the first floor.

Voted: (Unanimously) That the sum of two hundred (200) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the print- ing and publishing of the Town's By-Laws, the amend- ments thereof adopted at this meeting, or any portions thereof ; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the Board of Selectmen. There being no further business under Article 39 the Moderator declared it disposed of.
Article 40 taken up. (Lease or Disposal of Certain Land of Town.)
Voted: (Unanimously) That the Town do not au- thorize the Selectmen to lease or otherwise dispose of the whole or any part of the land belonging to the Town, particularly described in Article 40 of the Warrant.

Mr. Gaddis offered the following substitute motion which was lost.
That the sum of Four hundred dollars (400.00) be and hereby is appropriated for the purpose of providing suitable permanent quarters for Arlington Chapter, #49 Disabled American Veterans of the World War and that said sum be used by the Board of Selectmen in renovating, altering or making suitable such building or buildings as may be owned by the Town of Arlington or under the control or jurisdiction of the Town of Arlington and that such appropriation be made in accordance with Chapter 245, Section 3 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and that said sum be raised by General Tax and as heretofore set forth be expended under the direction and supervision of the Board of Selectmen.
On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was
Voted: That the Town do not appropriate the sum of four hundred (400) dollars for the purpose of providing headquarters for Arlington Chapter, Disabled American Veterans.
There being no further business under Article 42 the Moderator declared it disposed of.
Article 43 taken up. (Borrowing for Welfare Aid, etc.)
Voted: (Unanimously) That the Town do not, under article 43 of the warrant, authorize the Treasurer to bor- row any sum of money for welfare aid, old age assistance or soldiers' relief.
