REPORT OF TREE WARDEN
REPORT OF THE TREE WARDEN
To the Citizens of Arlington :
I herewith submit my twenty-fifth annual report as Tree Warden for the Town of Arlington.
During the year two hundred fifty (250) trees were planted on our streets. Fifteen (15) trees, all over six inches, were removed as same were dead or in a dangerous condition. In addition to the aforementioned, the Joint Board ordered the following removed : Four (4) Elms, one (1) Box Elder, one (1) Catalpa, seven (7) Maples, one (1) Birch and four (4) Willows. Four public hearings were held on applications of residents for the removal of certain trees, and all were granted with the exception of one on Park Avenue which was denied because of objections. Applications were made to remove trees which were considered unsafe, namely on Whittemore Street, Teel Street and Fairmont Street. As I did not feel that the condition of these trees warranted their removal, such applications were not granted.
In the recent hurricane many of our stately and stalwart trees were uprooted and others partially destroyed. By a sur- vey taken by our Engineering Department, there were approxi- mately five hundred ninety-six (596) trees destroyed on our public streets, and, in my opinion, only two hundred sixty-two (262) of them should be replaced. I would suggest that in the repairing of sidewalk damage where trees are at present existing, every care possible be taken in order that they may survive. One of the greatest enemies is the manner in which they are rebuilding sidewalks by placing and rolling filling so close to trees that they cannot expand as they grow.

ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT
I wish to extend my grateful appreciation to all depart- ments of the Town that so willingly co-operated with me dur- ing the hurricane. I also thank Edward O'Brien, Superin- tendent of the Board of Public Works; Lester Cameron of the Wire Department, and all laborers who worked day and night to make it possible for this Town to be one of the first cleaned and passable for the clergy, Fire Department, Police and pedestrians. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all past and present members of the Board of Selectment for their co-operation.
DANIEL M. DALEY,
Tree Warden.

SUPERINTENDENT TOWN HALL GROUNDS
REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF TOWN HOUSE GROUNDS
The Honorable Board of Selectmen,
Arlington, Mass.
Gentlemen :
I herewith submit my report as Superintendent of the Town Hall Grounds for the year ending December 31, 1938.
The general care and upkeep of the lawn, shrubbery, walks, etc., was attended to in the usual manner.
We are still having trouble with school children molesting the statue of the Indian which overlooks the pool in the center of the grounds, and I believe the only remedy for it is to have it protected by a wire fence of some sort.
The lawn was dug up quite a bit this past year, due to the fact that storm drains were installed to take water from the gutters of the hall, rather than have it go into dry wells which were not able to take care of it especially after a heavy rainfall.
The Patriots' Day celebration again attracted thousands of people around the grounds, which necessitated roping off the lawn in front of the hall. I also had to have men patrol- ling the grounds to handle the crowd and keep order.
The Hurricane Storm of September 21, 1938, did consid- erable damage to this property and that of the Robbins House. A total of nineteen (19) trees of different species were felled which had to be cut up and removed. Due to the terrific gale the Flagpole became loose at its foundation, but in due time it was made safe and secure again. It was also given two coats of paint at this time.
532
ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT
The base of the fountains on the platform of the Town Hall were again planted, and many favorable comments were received on them.
The grass plot in front of the hall extending from Acad- emy Street to the Library was removed and replaced by brick to the curbing. This was done because the excessive foot traffic going to and from the building prohibited the growing of grass.
The regular routine work of cutting grass, trimming bushes, edging and trimming of walks on the grounds sur- rounding the Robbins House was attended to in the proper manner. At the present writing a new road leading in from Massachusetts Avenue is under the process of construction, and should be completed in a short while.
In conclusion I wish to extend my thanks to the Board of Selectmen, their Secretary, the men of the department and all Town officials for their co-operation during the entire year.
Respectfully yours,
GEORGE M. DOLAN, Superintendent.
