In accordance with Section 132 of Chapter 54 of the General Laws, the total number of voters checked on the voting lists in each precinct was forwarded to the Secretary of the Common- wealth.
In connection with the work of the Department of Corpora- tions and Taxation, a list of Town Officials was forwarded to the Director of Accounts.
ANNUAL TOWN MEETING, MARCH 19, 1956
Pursuant to the Warrant of the Selectmen served according to law upon the inhabitants of the Town of Arlington by a con- stable of said Town, notices having been sent by mail by the Town Clerk at least seven days before the day of the meeting to the town meeting members elected and qualified to act in town meetings in Arlington under the provisions of Chapter 43A of the General Laws, as amended, and published in the local newspapers, as required by the Town's By-Laws, the town meeting members met in the Town Hall, in said Town, on Monday, March 19, 1956, at eight o'clock in the evening. The Warrant calling the meeting was the notice sent by mail by the Town Clerk.
Lists of the duly qualified town meeting members were used at the entrances of the meeting place and were in charge of James E. Sweeney. The lists contained the names of two hundred forty-eight (248) town meeting members qualified to participate in and vote in town meetings in Arlington.
Lawrence W. Burt was sworn by the Town Clerk as Steno- grapher to impartially and correctly report the proceedings of the meeting to the best of his ability.
The Moderator, Lawrence E. Corcoran, called the meeting to order at 8 o'clock P.M. and, inasmuch as there were but eleven (11) members and five (5) members-at-large present, he promptly declared the meeting null and void because of the absence of a quorum.
On motion of Selectman Greeley, duly seconded, it was VOTED: (Unanimously) That the meeting adjourn to Wednes- day evening, March 21, 1956, at 8 o'clock.
The meeting thereupon adjourned at 8:02 P.M., Monday, March 19, 1956.

ADJOURNED ANNUAL TOWN MEETING, MARCH 21, 1956
Pursuant to the vote of adjournment of March 19, 1956, and written notices sent by mail by the Town Clerk, the town meeting members met in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, March 21, 1956, to act upon the remaining articles set forth in the Warrant for the Annual Town Meeting.
Lists of the duly qualified town meeting members were used at the entrances of the meeting place and were in charge of Philip T. Robinson and James E. Sweeney. The lists contained the names of two hundred fifty-two (252) town meeting members.
The check lists filed with the Town Clerk at the close of the meeting showed that one hundred ninety (190) members and eight (8) members-at-large attended the meeting.
Philip H. Burt was sworn by the Town Clerk as Stenographer to impartially and correctly report the proceedings of the meeting to the best of his ability.
The Moderator, Lawrence E. Corcoran, declaring a , quorum present, called the meeting to order at 8:10 o'clock P.M.
The meeting was opened with the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" by the assembly, accompanied by Mr. Augustus Mazzocca and Mr. Walter E. Russell of the School Department, and prayer offered by Rev. Newell S. Booth, Jr., Minister of the Arlington Heights Methodist Church.
The town meeting members who had not previously been sworn were thereupon sworn by the Moderator.
There being no objection to the request of Selectman Greeley, permission was granted by general consent for Messrs. Rawson, Sorensen, Harris and Hurd of the Board of Selectmen; Mr. Nicksay, Executive Secretary of the Board of Selectmen; Messrs. Hauser and Cooledge of the Board of Assessors; Mr. Wells, Executive Secretary of the Board of Assessors; Messrs. Reddan, Fallon and Frost of the Personnel Board; Mr. Morris, Executive Secretary of the Personnel Board; Messrs. Barnard, Dunn, Roach, LaJoie, Ahern, Keefe, Guinan, Loud, Sisson, Johnston, Gorton, Richardson, Streng and Hayes of the Finance Committee; Mr. Farrow, Executive Secretary of the Finance Committee and Mr. Purcell, Town Counsel, to sit within the town meeting enclosure.
The Town Clerk read the Call of the meeting and the Constable's Return of the Warrant, the reading of the remainder of the Warrant being waived by consent of the meeting.
On motion of Selectman Greeley, duly seconded, it was VOTED: (Unanimously) That if all the business of the meet- ing as set forth in the Warrant is not disposed of at this session, when the meeting adjourns, it adjourn to Friday evening, March 23, 1956, at 8 o'clock.

VOTED: That the remaining articles in the Warrant be now taken up separately in the order in which they appear in said War- rant, unless otherwise voted as to any particular article, and that the recommendations of the Finance Committee under said articles as presented in their printed report be considered as now before the meeting, to be voted upon without further motion, separately, under the respective articles as they appear in said report.
Article 4. (Assessment for County Hospital.)
VOTED: That payment to the County of Middlesex of amounts assessed upon or otherwise payable by the Town under Warrant issued by the County Commissioners in accordance with Chapter 500, Section 1, of the Acts of 1943: (A) the Town's share of the mainte- nance, operation and repair of Middlesex County Tuberculosis Hospi- tal during the last preceding calendar year, including interest on temporary notes issued therefor, in accordance with sections of Chap- ter 111 of the General Laws applicable thereto; (B) the Town's share of any and all other expenses in connection with said hospital, including expenses under section 25G (6) (a) of Chapter 32 of the General Laws inserted by Chapter 400 of the Acts of 1936; be and hereby is authorized, ratified and confirmed.
There being no further business under Article 4, the Moderator declared it disposed of.
Article 5. (Treasurer; Power to Borrow.)
VOTED : (Unanimously) That the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, be and hereby is authorized to borrow money on and after January 1, 1957, in anticipation of the revenue of the financial year beginning January 1, 1957, and to issue a note or notes therefor, payable within one year, and to renew any note or notes that may be given for a period of less than one year in accord- ance with Section 17, Chapter 44, General Laws and any amendments thereof; any debt or debts incurred under this vote to be paid from the revenue of the financial year beginning January 1, 1957.
There being no further business under Article 5, the Moderator declared it disposed of.
Article 6. (Claims or Charges of Symmes Arlington Hospital.)
VOTED: That the sum of twenty-three thousand seven hundred fifty-four and 39/100 (23,754.39) dollars be and hereby is appropriated to pay claims and charges of Symmes Arlington Hospital, including such claims and charges for aid, relief or care furnished prior to January 1, 1956, to persons falling into distress and standing in need of immediate relief; said sum to be raised by general tax and ex- pended under the direction of the Town Manager.
There being no further business under Article 6, the Moderator declared it disposed of.

VOTED: That the additional sum of Two thousand five hundred (2500) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the payment of architectural fees and for equipment and furnishings in Robbins Memorial Town Hall, said sum to be added to that appropriated under Article 54 of the 1946 Annual Town meeting for the purpose of erecting an addition or additions to the present Robbins Memorial Town Hall and the alteration or reconstruction of the present in- terior of said Robbins Memorial Town Hall to provide for the re- arrangement of Town Departmental quarters; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the Town Manager.
There being no further business under Article 7, the Moderator declared it disposed of.
Article 8. (Heating Equipment - Town Hall.)
VOTED: That no action be taken under Article 8 of the Warrant.

VOTED: (Unanimously) That Schedule A of the Classification Plan and Schedule B of the Pay Plan as established by Article 7C of the By-Laws be and hereby are deleted and are replaced by Classification Plan - Schedule A and Pay Plan - Schedule B as printed in the Warrant for the 1956 Annual Town Meeting, said amendment to become effective May 1, 1956; and to adjust wages and salaries to this plan the sum of three thousand seven hundred (3700) dollars be and hereby is appropriated; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended by the various departments affected.
There being no further business under Article 21, the Moderator declared it disposed of.

VOTED: That the Classification Plan - Schedule A and Pay Plan - Schedule B as established by Article 7C of the By-Laws be and hereby are amended by increasing all money figures contained therein by two hundred and eight (208) dollars in the Annual Salary Schedule and four (4) dollars in the Weekly Salary Schedule, and by increasing the compensation of part-time employees, whose hours of work follow a regular schedule, proportionally as their actual part-time service bears to the full-time service; and that for this purpose the sum of one hundred and fifteen thousand (115,000) dol- lars be and hereby is appropriated to be expended by the various departments affected; said sum to be raised by general tax.
