45 PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Trustees of the Public Library respectfully sub- mit their annual report including the Treasurer's and Li- brarian's report.

We take pleasure in calling to your attention the fact that the circulation has been larger by five hundred (500) than any previous year in its history. It was found neces- sary to make some changes in the magazines, some being dropped, others substituted, but there has been no decrease in the total number.

The Trustees take pleasure in announcing that the re- pairs to the Library building provided for in their report of 1916, approved by the town, have been effected in the main : -the roof has been reshingled: the porch steps and plat- form have been renewed in a substantial manner; the base- ment windows, badly decayed, have been repaired and the basement floor has been suitably strengthened. These re- pairs have incurred an outlay of about $150 of the sum ap- propriated, leaving $75 to be expended for betterments now under consideration.

It is proposed to attach metal eave troughs to carry drainage past the sunken basement windows. At present the water finds these low places and seeps through the brick window frames, causing dampness under the base- ment floor as well as a buckling of the wainscotting of the cellar walls. These conditions should not be allowed to go uncorrected as far as it is possible to correct them, further it is proposed to paint the library one coat in the late spring.

The Trustees, having in mind the making of a water system which shall be reasonably efficient, have moved the

small building to the top of the hill, taken up the buried water pipe and disposed of the engine. The present plan is to sink a well through the base of the small building, equip with modern pump, jack and engine and thence lead the water wherever it may be needed. We have on hand about 350 feet of pipe in excellent condition which will be very useful for this purpose.
