Forestry
Arbor Day was observed April 26, at the Central School, with a program arranged by Mrs. Turner of the High School: and the High School and the Grammar School each planted a Douglas Fir in front of the School building. They also set out, under Mr. Cochran's direction, 18 Norway Spruce on the westerly part of the lawn, along the drive.
300 White Pine and 300 Norway Spruce were also plant- ed by the pupils on the lot in the rear of the school. These were furnished and set without cost to the town.
All available space in this lot is now occupied. The work of clearing the ground of briars, underbrush and un- desirable trees has been extended, but much more work in this line is needed. Of the wood removed from this lot, as reported last year, two cords was used by the Board of Pub- lic Welfare and the rest was sold at $4.00 a cord.
The trees in the rear of the Washington Street Cemetery, referred to last year as having been marked for cutting, were sold for $50.00 to Basil Simmons of Hanover, who stipulated that he would take the logs only, and would not be required to take care of the tops. These have been taken care of by Mr. Bowker of the Cemetery Committee and the wood derived from them and some dead trees have paid for the labor of removing them. He has done a fine piece of work in clearing up the brush and some unsightly trees, and "weeding" the young pines; and the appearance of the woods, as seen from the cemetery is greatly improv- ed.

TOWN OF NORWELL
It was claimed that the money received for these trees belonged to the cemetery, and it has been added to the per- manent fund of the cemetery.
The state will furnish young trees free of charge for Town Forest planting, but we have now no un-occupied land for planting. If any citizen has waste or unused land which he is willing to donate for that purpose, the commit- tee will gladly care for it for the best interest of the town.
The pines on the "Town House lot" have been pruned, and weeded, and the selectmen have had similar work done on a portion of Gaffield Park.
On November 8 and 9, the three members of the Town Forest Committee attended a "conference of Town Forest Committees," held under the auspices of the Massachusetts Forestry Association at Westfield. Besides meetings in the Community building in Westfield, we were taken to the Westfield Town Forest of 5000 acres, and to the Russell Town Forest of 2570 acres, the two largest Town For- ests in the state.
These are both mostly outside the towns which own them, being maintained primarily to protect the watersheds of those towns.
Demonstrations of pruning and of "forest weeding" were given by experts from the celebrated Harvard Town Forest of Fitchburg.
