Another new metal filing case was purchased this summer, part of which will be used for pictures and other material on Westford which is increasing all the time.
The Library Art Club which has given much enjoyment through the sets of pictures loaned to the library, has been compelled to dis- band due to the ill health and death of Miss Alice G. Chandler of Lancaster, who has been its leader. The pictures were divided among the member libraries, Westford receiving twelve. One set consisted of 34 views of Westford taken by Miss Julia F. Fletcher, Allen C. Sargent and others, probably about 1900. These form a very wel- come and valuable addition to our pictures of old Westford.
Mrs. Mabel Whitney Wright, who with her mother, Mrs. Hiram Whitney and Miss Emily Frances Fletcher, started our collection of pictures of old houses of Westford, has recently contributed a few more pictures and many negatives made at that time.
The Nashoba 4 H Service Club with members from other towns met in Library hall on March 14, at which time the Librarian showed moving pictures which she had taken on her recent European trip.
The fines and other receipts of the library collected and turned over to the town were $50.02.
Thanks are due to Mr. Harold M. Davis of Nashua, New Hamp- shire, whose 'hobby is mineralogy, for the time he spent helping to rearrange and label those collections of minerals left to the library by Mr. William E. Frost and Miss Emily Frances Fletcher. His in- terest in the mineral andalusite which is common in Westford and mentioned in Hodgman's history, brought him to town several years ago and has led to continued interest in our collection.
An early painting of Westford Academy has been on exhibition at the library. .. The date on the picture is 1815 but the artist is un- known. While the surroundings are inaccurate and the work very unskilled and crude, nevertheless it is of interest as a memento of the early days. It is hoped that the picture may be purchased from its out-of-town owners by some one interested in having the picture remain here.
Miss Edna M. Hamlin, who has been such an efficient assistant for more than three years, has now secured a full time position else- where. Her work has been appreciated by librarian and patrons and she will be much missed.
The librarian attended the Massachusetts Library Club meeting in Boston in January, and the American Library Association meeting in
120
Denver in June. This was followed by a trip to Salt Lake City and Yellowstone Park.
While the fad for doing jig-saw puzzles has declined our collection has been much appreciated by the sick and shut-ins.
A few additions have been made to the list of magazines, which have been much enjoyed this year. All except current numbers may be borrowed for one week and the list for the coming year is as fol- lows:
