REPORT OF SCHOOL PHYSICIAN
Members of the School Committee:
The following is my report as school physician for the year end- ing December 31, 1936.
The usual physical examination was made on all the children at- tending the public schools of Westford twice during the school term.
All of the cases in which major physical defects are found are rechecked by a special physical examination every school term and the parents of those found with a major physical defect are informed at once in order that the children may receive treatment at once, if needed.
A special examination of the pupils who are to take part in athletic sports has always been made on request of the coaches of the athletic teams and those found with a major defect are not allowed to play without the special permit of their parents.
I have always responded to calls at the schools in the emergency cases when called by the school principals.
The relatively few undernourished children have been under the observation of the Board of Health nurse during the school term and she has most ably assisted me during my examinations and calls at the schools.
In my work for the past year I have had the splendid co-opera- tion of the Board of Health nurse, teachers, and the parents of the children.
Respectfully submitted,
DR. D. W. COWLES,
School Physician.

REPORT OF MUSIC SUPERVISOR
Mr. Robert Barclay, Superintendent of Schools, Westford, Massachusetts
Dear Sir:
Since my appointment as Supervisor of Music in the schools of Westford, I feel that much advancement has been made although for the first few months progress seemed rather slow.
-
I have spent considerable time in teaching the children two im- portant elements in singing: First, to sing softly which insures sweet- ness, together with good singing position which insures breath control and better tone quality. Second, to feel the rhythm, the swing of their songs and exercises.
In all of our first grades we have Rhythm Bands which help lay the foundation of the work in the latter.
Much time has been given to individual singing and considerable advancement has been accomplished through all the grades which greatly benefits our two and three-part singing. We have given some time to the theory and arithmetic of music and I am pleased with the results of the tests.
In the Academy the time allowance of only one music period a week and the material allowed is very inadequate for accomplishing what is usually required in a high school music course.
In the graded schools where attendance has increased, more new books are greatly needed to replace the insufficient number of badly torn and worn books. I hope in the near future these may be replaced by new books.
At this time I wish to thank the Superintendent for his co-opera- tion and the teachers for their helpful support in my efforts.
Respectfully submitted,
LILLY M. MORAN,
Music Supervisor.

REPORT OF LIBRARIAN
January 1, 1937.
To the Trustees of the J. V. Fletcher Library:
The report of the Library for the year ending December 31, 1936, is herewith presented.
The work at the library has been carried on as usual-loaning books, checking off on their return, mending them, putting them away, and then loaning them again. Meanwhile new books must be bought, catalogued and made ready for circulation; pictures must be mounted and loaned; overdue notices written; books sent to the de- posit stations and schools; reference questions answered; etc.
Travel continues to be the most popular group among the adult non- fiction with 696 books loaned. Biography is second with 503 and use- ful arts (medicine, engineering, aviation, agriculture, home economics) third with 426 books.
As the family who was living in the Community Hall has moved away, it has been necessary to give up the deposit station at Brookside temporarily. It is hoped that some other arrangement can be made if the people in that neighborhood wish to have the books.
The library has continued to borrow necessary books on various subjects from the Library Commission. Among these were 20 books of plays for the use of the Lake Shore Theatre. Books in Italian, Polish and Russian were also borrowed. Other libraries which have loaned books to us were the Congregational Library, Lowell, Newton, Watertown, Gardiner, Boston Medical and Littleton. We have loaned books to Groton, Littleton, Chelsea, Petersham and Adams.
During the celebration of the Nashoba Apple Blossom Festival the library kept open house on both Sundays, thus giving many people a chance to go over the building which was much appreciated.
The librarian collected and turned over to the town $39.21 in fines.
Two years ago the library received word that George R. Harrison, a former Westford resident, had willed a portion of his private library to his native town but the books were not sent until this year when nine cases filled with books arrived. Some are already in circulation and others will be soon.
127
A mineral exhibit for the Frost museum case has been arranged with the assistance of Mr. Harold M. Davis of Nashua, N. H., to illustrate the formation of granite and gneiss as found in the quarries of. Westford. Grouped around the block of granite are the primary constituents-mica, feldspar and quartz. Beyond these are arranged the accessory and secondary materials, consisting of apatite, garnets, kaolin, epidote, chlorite, etc. Several varieties of granite from other places are also shown. In the back of the case has been placed a specimen of andalusite, a mineral found in Westford, "where the perfect andalusite prisms rival those of Andalusia" according to the U. S. Geological Survey. Knowledge of its exact location in the town is not known but is much desired. Can anyone tell us?
The librarian attended the meetings of the Massachusetts Library Association in Boston in January, at Swampscott in June and at Amherst in October.
A few additions have been made to the list of magazines, whose circulation has increased over that of last year. All except current numbers may be borrowed for one week and the list for the coming year is as follows:
