ANNUAL REPORT - TRUSTEES OF J. V. FLETCHER LIBRARY
The Trustees herewith submit their Annual Report for the year 1964, including the report of the Librarian:
The board organized with Alan W. Bell as Chairman and H. Arnold Wilder as Secretary. Mrs. Elizabeth C. Taylor was re-elected as Trustee and we welcome Mrs. Eleanor C. Fletcher as a new member.
In addition to increased use of our reference facilities by Townspeople and students, continued increase in both the numbers of new borrowers and in book lovers is to be noted, and particularly referenced in our Librarian's report. This growth is a healthy indi- cation of increased interest in our Library by new residents, and is presenting a problem of adequate book stacking as we endeavor to have a wider selection of books for this greater patronage. Serious consid- eration will be given this problem in the months ahead.
The Children's Room, the gift of Miss Marian Winnek, continues to be a popular area for our youngsters and draws much favorable com- ment from the parents who accompany their children there. The atmos- here is enhanced by our Assistant Librarian, Mrs. Martin Denton, who contributes much in the way of guidance and interest in books at children's level, as well as providing story telling hours during the summer months.
The walls of both our reading and Reference Rooms and the entrance hall were cleaned and repainted in light pastel shades, which brightened these areas considerably and help to create a pleasing atmosphere. A new reading lamp, presented by Miss Winnek, was installed in the Reading Room and Lounge chairs in this room are to be re-upholstered in matching decor.
Considerable repair was performed on the Library roof, including replacement of slate, roof gutters and particularly the roof cornices, many of which had loosened over the years and actually presented a hazard until secured. A hot water heating unit has been installed in the basement and attached to lavatories and cleaning units.
An intercom system has been installed between the Librarian's desk and the Children's Room desk, thereby facilitating rapid com- munication between these areas and improving service to patrons.
Miss Marian Winnek, a trustee for several years, found it nec- essary to resign from the board for personal reasons. Long a benefactor of the Library, her most recent gift was the Children's Room, which has been and continues to be enjoyed by many. Her resignation was accepted with regret and the Trustees thereafter unanimously elected her an Honorary Trustee in appreciation of her many kindnesses.
142
Changes in our staff during the past year included Mrs. Martin Denton, Assistant Librarian, Mrs. Delores Johnson, Clerk-Typist, and Mr. Clayton Dearth, Custodian.
The Trustees express their sincere appreciation for the efforts and co-operation of our staff during this past year.
Respectfully submitted,
Alan W. Bell, Chairman Eleanor C. Fletcher
Claudine N. Huckins Elizabeth C. Taylor H. Arnold Wilder, Secretary
REPORT OF EMILY F. FLETCHER LECTURE FUND - 1964
The Emily F. Fletcher Fund provided the children of the Town of Westford with an excellent program in 1964. On August 19th, the Children's Theatre of Boston presented Jack and the Beanstalk, as an outdoor production, on the grounds of the J. V. Fletcher Library and was greatly enjoyed by the numerous children present. Total expense of the presentation was $115.00.
REPORT OF MARY ATWOOD LECTURE FUND - 1964
No programs were presented by the Mary Atwood Lecture Fund in
1964. The first program scheduled in 1965, on March 22, is another story of the sailing ship "Yankee" and is entitled "The Yankee Sails the Nile", narrated by Capt. Irving Johnson.

REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN
It is a pleasure, once again to report progress at the Library, with more borrowers and greater circulation, the statistics of which appear elsewhere, showing 30.5% increase in four years.
Our new Children's Librarian, Mrs. Martin Denton has proved her- self to be a very efficient, personable and well-liked staff member. Through her efforts, a group of Senior Girl Scouts has given valuable service, the Children's Room is open the regular Library hours and has become a very happy center of activity.
We are indebted to the group of Senior Girl Scouts who come in every Wednesday afternoon and by Story-telling, typing catalog cards, making Bulletin Boards, repairing books, processing new books and other Library-Aide work, have given us valuable service and at the same time earned Library Aide badges.
Before school closed in June, Mrs. Denton visited the schools to present the Summer Reading Program, "Reading for fun" which proved very successful. One hundred children completed the requirements. Four elementary schools and five private schools participated.
The Reading-Discussion Group for Grades 7 and 8 were not success- ful and will probably not be attempted another year. James McMahon was the only one to complete the requirements and is given commendation for his perseverance. Miss Barbara Crawford was the only one to complete the Louisa May Alcott program and was awarded a trip to the Alcott house in Concord.
Once again, the Emily F. Fletcher Lecture Fund enabled us to present the Boston Children's Theater in a presentation of "Jack and theBeanstalk". Boys and girls of the East Boston Camps were special guests. At this time the Certificates were awarded to those children who had fulfilled the requirements of the Reading programs. We express appreciation to the police for closing the street in front of the Library so the program could be presented in safety.
The Mineralogical Club and the Garden Club meet regularly at the Library.
National Library week was observed in April. Children's Book Week from November 1 - 7 was a busy one -- Open House, on Monday, Story Hours on Wednesday, Miss May E. Day, sharing her hobby of dolls on Thursday and Prof. Frederic Burtt, sharing his knowledge of the Indians of this area with an enthusiastic audience of boys and girls on Saturday. A collection of books suitable for Christmas giving, loaned by the Concord Bookship was on display all week.
Mrs. Denton, Mrs. Forty and your Librarian were privileged to attend the course held in Topsfield, given by Miss Joan Sawyer from the Division of Library Extension on Children's Book Selection
145
and Reading Guidance. This was not only helpful to us but the Library also benefited by the gift of books of our own selection, to improve the collection of children's books in the amount of $200.
Several teachers have brought their classes to acquaint them with the Library and its services. On several occasions, classes from the Roudenbush School have been brought to the Library during the morning for research to assist those pupils who were unable to come during regular hours because of the double sessions.
The Bookmobile makes its regular stops at Nabnasset and continues to give us invaluable service, filling many requests for books to supplement our collection.
Books are taken regularly to both Nursing Homes.
The services of Mr. Dearth in helping maintain the quiet needed for study is much appreciated.
As we have noted earlier, we are growing and are rapidly outgrow- ing our facilities. We have need of improvement in several areas; among them, an Adult Reading Room, Study area and more shelf room. It is hoped a solution may be found in the near future.
I wish to express sincere appreciation for the many gifts of books given to the Library; to the Garden Club for the lovely floral arrangements brought each week; for the kindness and consideration shown me and the rest of the staff and for the cooperation of Trustees and staff without which we could not function.
