ANNUAL REPORT - TRUSTEES OF J.V. FLETCHER LIBRARY

The Trustees herewith submit their Annual Report for the year 1965, including the report of the Librarian:

The Board organized with H. Arnold Wilder as Chairman and Mrs. Eleanor C. Fletcher as Secretary. Mr. Alan W. Bell was re-elected as a Trustee for three years, and we welcomed new members, Mrs. Arvilla Fox of Westford, elected for three years, and Mr. Richard W. Hall of Graniteville, elected to fill the un-expired term of Miss Marian Winnek.

With the provision of increased reference facilities at both the Westford Academy and the new North Middle School, some relief has been afforded the heavy reference requirements at our Library, but is possibly offset by students from other communities who frequently seek assistance for their school assignments. Growth in the number of borrowers has in- creased over 30% in the last five years, and by shelf re-arrangement and the addition of new steel shelving in the adult section, limited accommodation has been provided for new volumes, as noted in the Librarian's report. In order to overcome the crowded condition of our book shelves, serious consideration must be given to this problem in the months ahead.

The Children's Room has again been a most popular area. Mrs. Martin Denton, Children's Librarian has aided and encouraged our youngsters in a proper selection of reading materials. Much credit is due Mrs. Denton for her continued capacity to arrange story telling hours during the year.

The walls and ceiling of the stairway and hall, as well as the Librarian's office area were painted in a matching color to our Reading and Reference rooms, and two Lounge Chairs in the Reading room re- upholstered. Outside roof gutters and a number of loose bricks were re- paired on the northwest wall of the Library and a new septic tank in- stalled. Similar attention is planned to the southwest roof where icing is a problem.

The most obvious change in our facilities has been the installation of a new Charging Desk, received late this year. This unit, completely portable, is of matching decor with present facilities, permits in- creased efficiency in the processing of patron's requirements and opens up the access to book stacks. Acquisition was made possible through the Albert Prescott Fund, under the jurisdiction of the Trustees.

The Trustees, in behalf of the Town of Westford, accept with appreciation the generous gift from Miss Marian F. Winnek of additional land adjoining the original library property. This will allow for ex- pansion which will probably be necessary in the near future.

We are pleased to welcome new members to our staff, Mrs. Charles N. Beall as Library Assistant, and Miss Carol Allen as clerk-typist. The Trustees are most appreciative of the efforts and co-operation of the Librarian and her staff during this past year.

REPORT OF THE EMILY F. FLETCHER LECTURE FUND - 1965

The Emily F. Fletcher Fund again provided the children of Westford and numerous visitors with an excellent program in 1965. On August 18, the Children's Theatre of Boston presented, as an outdoor production, "Rumpelstiltskin" on the grounds of the J. V. Fletcher Library. Through the cooperation of the police, the street in front of the Library was closed to traffic so that the program could be presented in safety. Children from the East Boston Camps were special guests. The cost of the presentation was $95.00.

REPORT OF MARY ATWOOD LECTURE FUND - 1965

REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN

As we come to the end of the old year and look backward over the year's activities, we note with satisfaction, evidences of growth and increased use.

It had become increasingly evident, that a rearrangement of the children's collection was imperative. By carefully reevaluating accord- ing to grade level, each book in the so-called Junior-High room, the con- clusion was reached that 80% of the books could be moved to the Children's room; the remainder to be absorbed in the adult stacks.

This move, plus the purchase of three new book stacks, has enabled us to provide an Office and Staff room, much needed work room for the processing of books, additional shelf room, especially for oversized books, foreign books, and the Record collection, and a much larger and more complete children's collection.

The new charge desk has opened up the stack room area to the public, thereby making the whole collection easily accessable and available to all. This entire move has been enthusiastically received by the borrowers

We gratefully acknowledge many gifts of books and magazines, the flower arrangements furnished by members of the Garden Club which enhance the beauty of our building, the interesting exhibits loaned for the Frost Museum Case, and the many thoughtful acts of kindness of the Staff.

We were honored by the Newark Museum, Neward, N. J., which requested the loan of the medallion "Head of a Roman Girl". This was exhibited for six weeks as part of their exhibition of the work of American women artists. The medallion is the work of Margaret E. Foley, who, as a young girl, taught in the Westford schools.

Your Librarian has had the previlege of attending meetings of the Merrimac Valley Library Association, N. E. Library Association at Went- worth-By-The-Sea, and the Regional Library Association. She was invited to speak before a Problems of Democracy class at Westford Academy to tell the Library story.

The Children's Room, under the direction of Mrs. Martin Denton is a rapidly growing section of the Library, frequented by happy, active and enthusiastic young borrowers. A most successful reading program was conducted again this summer with 103 (10 honorary) completing the pro- gram and 10 schools being represented. The Children's Theatre again climaxed the Reading Program with its presentation of "Rumpelstiltskin." Approximately 1000 children and parents attended this fine performance and the presentation of diplomas to those who had completed the require- ments of the Reading Program.

Mrs. Denton visited the sixth grade students at the North Middle School to tell the library procedures and the new services available to them. She also has shown slides and talked to the third grade at Frost School on books available for their interests.

Children's Book Week, October 30 - November 6, provided an opportunit: to offer special programs for each library day. Miss May E. Day showed her dolls; Mrs. Roscoe Corey talked on Rocks and Minerals, and helped to

identify specimens brought in by young collectors; Mrs. Forty told stories on one afternoon. The week was climaxed by the talk on Saturday morning by Prof. Frederic Burtt who told about the Indians of this area to an enthusiastic audience of nearly 100.

Story Hours have been held for children ages 4-8. Volunteers from Senior Girl Scouts and Lowell Teacher's College, alternating with Mrs. Forty and Mrs. Denton served as story-tellers.

A "Wee-Ones" corner, which each little pre-school child claims for his very own was made possible by the kindness of Mr. Alan Bell who built and donated the "Book Trough" which holds picture books and allows the child to browse and "read" his beloved books. On the wall above is displayed the art work of aspiring young artists.

An Adult Reference Shelf which serves as a guide for selecting children's books has been established. Parents and teachers have found this most useful.

The Junior Book Review Committee is a new activity for the younger set. A group of 12 carefully selected readers from grades 4 - 8 have been busy reading and reviewing new junior books. The reviews are typed and pasted in the books to aid other children in making their selections. This committee has met to discuss books they have read, and voted on a candidate for the Newbery Medal Award.

We continue to cooperate with the schools; collections of books and pictures for classroom use are loaned to all teachers requesting them, and teachers are encouraged to bring classes to the library for instruction and orientation.

The Bookmobile continues to give invaluable service both at the Library and Nabnasset. Books are taken regularly to Nursing Homes.

We have recently joined the new Eastern Regional Library System, the first phase of which is the Inter-Library Loan Service from the Boston Public Library.

As we look backward to review our accomplishments, so we look forward to greater things in the future. We must agree that as Westford grows, the Library must anticipate this growth and plan accordingly. Always keeping in mind the preservation of the beauty and traditions of our building, we must also recognize the purpose of the library and the growing needs of the public. More shelving, catalog space, study area, conference room and the important Adult Reading area are needed.

I express my sincere appreciation for the help and cooperation of the Trustees and Staff without which we could accomplish nothing.
