ANNUAL REPORT - TRUSTEES J.V. FLETCHER LIBRARY

The Trustees herewith submit their Annual Report for the year 1967, including the report of the Librarian.

The Board organized with Carl G. Lyman as Chairman and Mrs Georgia A. Fox as Secretary. Mrs. Eleanor S. Fletcher and Mr. H. Arnold Wilder were re-elected as Trustees for three years.

1967 has witnessed the continued use of the Library by citizens of all ages, in ever increasing numbers -- 600 new borrowers and over 50,000 books circulated. The interest, enthusiasim and support of these borrowers is most gratifying. More pressing than ever is the Trustees' responsibility for providing more adequate library services.

Over the past few years the Trustees have pointed out the various physical inadequacies of our present library building in meeting the needs of today's library patron. A "Library Needs Survey" was con- ducted this year to find the solutions to these problems.

At the Annual Town Meeting in March, 1967, the Town authorized this study. In selecting the firm to do this job the Trustees set up the following criteria: The consultant chosen to do the survey must 1. make a thorough on-the-spot study of the Library; 2. concrete, graphic solutions must be presented after consultation with the Lib- rarian and Trustees; 3. maximum utilization must be made of the ex- isting building; 4. both present and long-range plans should be pre- sented.

During May and June we interviewed architects and in August we chose Hill and Associates of Cambridge to do the study. Throughout the early fall Mr. Stephen Friedlander of Hill Associates worked closely with Mrs. Day and the Trustees. After many meetings and much discussion A PROGRAM FOR THE MODERNIZATION AND EXPANSION OF THE J. V. FLETCHER LIBRARY was compiled. Copies of the full report and draw- ings may be found at the Library.

This program envisions a two-stage plan. The first stage to be completed now and the second at some future date. The first phase utilizes every available square foot within our present library build- ing for maximum efficiency.

After completion of stage one, we would have a book capacity of 28, 500 as compared with an existing capacity of 17,000 volumes. Read- er Seating would be increased from an existing capacity of 26 to 87 and shelving would be expanded from a present 3,000 lin. ft. to 5,100 lin. ft. We would have adequate sanitary facilities, proper division of recreational reading, reference and serious study areas; new lib- rary services such as facilities for listening activities, rare books storage and adequate display of historical materials.

At the present time we have no provision for off-street parking. The requirements of safety and convenience demand this. The comple- tion of stage one would provide this service.

167

The Trustees note with regret the passing of former Trustee William C. Roudenbush. We appreciate the generous provision in his will that 600 shares of Boston Fund be left to the Trustees of the J. V. Fletcher Library to be known as the William C. Roudenbush Fund. The income from said fund to be used for such library purposes as the Trustees may determine.

The repair work, begun last year, on the roof was completed. A new card catalog was purchased. Brickwork in the basement was repair- ed and some painting done in the Children's Room. The upper hall has been painted and with last year's installation of the fire escape is now better able to serve as a place for small group meetings.

The busy and creative Children's Room took on a lighter appear- ance with the installation of new florescent lighting. A new charge desk made possible by the Albert Prescott Fund and additional shelv- ing purchased with money from the William R. Taylor Fund were happy additions in this department also.

On March 8, 1967, we finalized and adopted a book selection policy.

We are pleased to welcome new members to our staff, Mrs. Patricia Hartley as Clerk-typist and Mr. Frank Beauregard as Custodian. The Trustees are most appreciative of the efforts and cooperation of the Librarian and her staff during this past year.

REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN

The Librarian of the J. V. Fletcher Library reports a happy, busy year with increased activity in all areas.

The Children's Room, under the direction of Mrs. Martin Denton, continues to offer the children of the town books of quality to meet their demands for leisure reading and school assignments. In addi- tion, special programs are planned for various age groups and inter- ests. The Picture Book Hours for Pre-schoolers have proved very suc- cessful. The summer "Reading for fun" program attracted 205 readers from Grades 1-8 from 19 different schools. The Boston Children's Theatre presented Cinderella to the delight of 1,000 children and adults. We are indebted to several people who generously gave of themselves to make Children's Book Week a memorable one. Mrs. Edna Lerer of Stowe delighted an audience of over 100 children with color- ed slides of mines and minerals. Thrills and chills were the order of the day when 120 children gathered on Halloween afternoon to hear Mrs. Denton tell ghost stories. The movie "White Mane" was made pos- sible through Inter-Library Loan, the kindness of the School Depart- ment who loaned a projector and Mr. Philip Hall our projectionist. Mrs. Eston Fox gave a talk on horsemanship following the showing of the film. Capt. Rudolph Dichtl showed exciting colored N.A.S.A. films of the Space Program including the "Space Walk."

Mrs. Denton participated in a Round Table of 4th and 5th grade teachers of the town at the Nabnasset School, and conducted a Lib- rary Orientation Program for the 6th grade at the North Middle School. Teachers are encouraged to bring their pupils to the Library for ori- entation and instruction. Book collections are loaned to teachers for classroom use.

The Bookmobile from the State Regional Library Center continues to serve the community with monthly visits to the Library and also Nabnasset. Urgent requests are filled by mail. Large collections are borrowed from the Regional Library Center to meet heavy demands of special school assignments.

The Eastern Regional Library System has been in existance for one year. The Inter-Library Loan was the first service offered and has been of inestimable value in filling requests for books not in our collection. 138 books were borrowed through this service. A monthly Newsletter, Booklists and a film-loan program are among the services offered, and are but the forerunners of many more services to be de- veloped.

Meetings of the Mineral Club, Garden Club, D.A.R. and Extension Service Classes have been held in Library Hall.

Edward Rowe Snow, well-known author and lecturer, was Guest Speak- er during National Library Week.

Much needed additions to the Card Catalog in both Adult and Children's Room were purchased.

171

Trust Fund money has been used to purchase books and equipment. The Albert Prescott Fund supplied funds from which a new Charging Desk was purchased, and the W. R. Taylor Fund provided extra book shelves for the Children's Room. Stephen S. Stone, Mary H. Law, Augustus Fletcher Funds were used to purchase the Encyclopedia Britannica, Col- liers and Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Several less popular periodicals have been dropped and the fol- lowing added: Christian Century, Foreign Affairs, High Fidelity, Mod- ern Photography, Plays and Yachting.

We acknowledge gratefully the many gifts to the Library. A com- plete list may be seen in the Library. Special mention is made of the gift of the Young Peoples Science Encyclopedia for the Children's Room by Mrs. Austin Fletcher; 30 L. P. Records from the Columbia Re- cord Company; 12 volumes from the Nashoba Valley Mineralogical Society; and 6 volumes from Westford Homemakers Group I. Miss Ellen Blackburn has donated many unpaid hours as a volunteer assistant.

Your Librarian attended various Library Meetings including Mer- rimack Valley Library Association, Massachusetts Library Association, and the Eastern Regional Library System. She had the privilege of spending three glorious weeks in Sweden visiting relatives. The two beautiful new libraries visited in Sweden proved to be a most reward- ing experience. The Librarians were most cordial and patiently an- swered all questions.

A study of the statistics which follow will indicate the increase in Circulation, Reference work and new borrowers; and a visit to the Library will show that the need for more shelving and study room for both children and adults is acute.

To the Trustees and Staff, I extend my sincere appreciation for the cooperation, encouragement and the many acts of kindness I have received.

Respectfully submitted,

Alice V. Day LIBRARIAN
