REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN
The busy, eventful year, 1966, has seen many changes, improve- ments, and activities in the J. V. Fletcher Library.
The patrons of the library as well as the staff are enthusi- astic about the new charge desk, which is both beautiful to look at and efficient to use; the carpet on the stairs to the Children's Room on the lower level and the redecorated stack-room. The mimeo- graph has been a most useful piece of equipment and has been in con- stant use.
It is a joy to work in pleasant surroundings and with effi- cient equipment.
The new additional hours of opening, now totaling 30 hours have also been well received.
Mrs. Martin Denton has successfully completed a course in Classifying and Cataloguing of Library Materials, and your Li- brarian, a course in Reference work at Northeastern University.
Your Librarian had the pleasure of attending the American Library Association Conference in New York City; Library meetings at Dracut and Wentworth-by-the-Sea.
In May, the library was host to the Merrimac Valley Library Association for its regular spring meeting.
After six years in the planning stage, the Eastern Regional Library System was formally inaugurated in October. This is a most important step in the development of library service. As a member of the system, the J. V. Fletcher Library borrowers will benefit by the expanded program offered.
The Bookmobile continues to serve Westford, with monthly stops at the Library and at Nabnasset.
Books are taken regularly to the Nursing Homes in Graniteville and Westford.
With the cooperation of Mr. Dearth, we have been able to col- lect books long overdue. These books are valued at over $300.00. We shall continue this policy of collecting books which are not re- turned after sending several reminder notices, and allowing a reasonable period of time for such return.
We are proud to call attention to the fact that when circu- lation generally over the country has decreased, our circulation has increased by 13%.
The Library has received many gifts which are gratefully ac- knowledged. A list of these are available at the Library and may be seen on request.

Among the outstanding gifts are: The Law Library of Mr. Rich- ard Tuttle; money from the Westford Homemakers, Group I, which Was used to buy art books for the Children's room; and many vacation hours spent by Patricia Poulsen doing volunteer work in the Library.
From Federal Funds, Westford received $300.00 worth of Refer- ence books which did much to strengthen our Reference section.
The Children's Room, under the direction of Mrs. Martin Denton is the center of increasing activity. The Summer Reading Program Was most successful, with 231 children reading. Reports were sent to 13 schools which were represented on the program. Again, the Boston Children's Theatre was the climax of the program.
An estimated 1000 children and their parents enjoyed the pre- sentation of Pinocchio, made possible by funds from the Emily F. Fletcher Lecture Fund.
Story hours for 4 and 5 year olds have been held each Wednesday and Saturday morning during the fall and winter months. The appre- ciation of all is due to Mrs. Lois Eisaman, Mrs. Eileen McKenna, and Mrs. Grace Forty who have devoted time and talent to make this ac- tivity such a happy experience. Mrs. Denton and Miss Carol Allen of the staff have also participated.
The success of Children's Book Week, October 31-November 5 was due to the kindness of 4 people who gave of themselves to enter- tain the children of Westford. Miss May E. Day showed her lovely dolls; Mrs. Norman Fields of Littleton shared her knowledge of, and enthusiasm for nature; Mrs. Edna Lerer of Stowe brought a collec- tion of gems and minerals, giving to each child present (50) a be- ginning collection of minerals mounted and identitied; Mr. Edward Neville gave a most interesting and informative talk on the early history of Westford.
Mrs. Denton and your Librarian have welcomed opportunities to tell the "Library Story" to various groups, including "Operation Headstart" and Brownie Troops who came to the Library.
I wish to express my appreciation for the many acts of kind- ness to me and the staff by pations and trustees and for the co- operation of Trustees and staff without which we could accomplish nothing.
Respectfully submitted,
Alice V. Day

REPORT OF THE EMILY F. FLETCHER FUND - 1966
The Emily F. Fletcher Fund again provided the children of Westford and numerous visitors with an excellent program in 1966. On August 18, the Children's Theatre of Boston presented an out- door production of "Pinocchio" on the grounds of the J. V. Flet- cher Library. Through the cooperation of the police, the street in front of the library was closed to traffic so that the program could be presented in safety. Children from the East Boston Camps were special guests. The cost of the presentation was $132.00.
REPORT OF THE MARY ATWOOD LECTURE FUND - 1966
On April 27, 1966, the Atwood Lecture Fund presented the artists Goya and Matteo in "A World of Dancing". Cost of the presentation was $751.00.
On October 9, 1966, the Atwood Lecture Fund presented a lecture by Lisa Hobbs, author and reporter entitled "RED CHINA REPORTS". Cost of the presentation was $722.85.
The Trustees regret that the varied, interesting and expen- sive programs provided free to the public through the Mary Atwood Lecture Fund are not well attended.

ANNUAL REPORT - TRUSTEES OF J. V. FLETCHER LIBRARY
The trustees herewith submit their Annual Report for the year 1966, including the report of the Librarian.
The Board organized with Mrs. Georgia A. Fox as Chairman and Mr. Richard W. Hall as Secretary. Mr. Hall was re-elected as a mem- ber for three years, and we welcomed a new member, Mr. Carl G. Ly- man, elected for three years.
Over 43,000 books were circulated during 1966, an increase of more than 5,000 over the previous year's circulation. The greatly increased use of the Library by students for study and research has taxed the facilities severely. The trustees and Librarian have de- voted many hours to the problem of providing the badly needed ad- ditional space in the most economical and satisfactory manner. By remodeling space in the existing building it is anticipated that good library services may be provided for a maximum of ten years. With a plan to carry out the remodeling over a period of several years, the Trustees hope that the major portion of the renovation can begin in 1967.
In the Fall of the year, Saturday hours were changed from 1:30- 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m .- 6:00 p.m. The Trustees voted to extend Wed- nesday hours to 9:00 p.m. effective January 1, 1967.
The Children's Room has continued to be a most popular area. Mrs. Martin Denton, Children's Librarian, arranged Wednesday and Saturday morning story hours for pre-school children. These have been very enthusiastically received.
Several repairs were made to the roof and gutters of the Li- brary, and it became obvious that extensive repairs were needed to the gutters and downspouts. It is hoped that these may be com- pleted next year. The slate roof will require yearly attention to keep it in good condition.
The major addition to the building was the fire escape in- stalled on the north wall to provide a fire exit from the meet- ing room on the second floor. As a result of this installation, it is anticipated that the room will receive increased use by local organizations. At present, using the room are the D. A. R., Westford Garden Club, and Nashoba Valley Mineralogical Club.
Carpeting and painting have been the major improvements inside the Library. The Stack room was painted to match the Reading and Reference rooms. The red drapery which for many years covered the windows at the rear of the Stack Room was removed. This change has added considerable light and a feeling of airiness to the room and has been most favorably noticed by the public. The stairs leading to the Children's Room on the lower floor were carpeted, adding to the safety factor and greatly reducing the noise problem.

In their 1965 report the Trustees inadvertently neglected to report that on February 10, 1965, a Betsy Ross Flag was presented to the Library by Mrs. Elizabeth C. Taylor. Taking part in the pre- sentation ceremony were members of the Brownie and Girl Scout Troops.
On January 31, 1966, Mrs. Elizabeth C. Taylor presented an Am- erican flag and a State flag to the Library. Girl Scouts took part in the presentation ceremony. Mrs. Eleanor C. Fletcher accepted the flags on behalf of the Trustees of the Library.
The Trustees gratefully acknowledge the gift of the Law Library of the late Richard Tuttle presented to the Library by Mrs. Tuttle as requested by her husband.
The Trustees and the Library staff are very appreciative of the carpeting in the entrance foyer and lobby, the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Eastham Hockmeyer.
With the approval of Mr. Blanchard, Superintendent of Schools, the Trustees presented the portrait of Allan Cameron to the Cameron School. Mrs. Alice M. Murphy, Principal, accepted the portrait for the School.
Several of the Trustees attended Library meetings and seminars during the year. At the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association, Mr. Carl Lyman was elected First Vice-President of that organization.
We are pleased to welcome a new member to our staff, Mrs. Lois Eisaman as a Library Assistant. The Trustees are most appreciative of the efforts and co-operation of the Librarian and her staff dur- ing this past year.
