Well Child Clinic and Visiting Nurse Report

The Health Program for the 1948 year was very successful. As usual the highlight was the Well Child Conference held the week of April 26 through 30th. Dr. Arthur H. Goodwin and Mrs. Clara San- ford, R. N., conducted the Clinic.

Mrs. Ray Palmer, Dental Hygienist, examined the children's teeth for dental defects, and Miss Marjorie Morrison of the Nutrition Service Bureau discussed dietary and nutritional problems with the parents.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Carl Nelson, Chairman of the Child Welfare Committee, volunteers provided the transportation as needed

The need for bedside nursing service has increased appreciably since the generalized service was extended to the town, and it has been a pleasure for me to work with the townspeople in this more personal way.

399 cases were given service with a total of 910 visits made to the homes for nursing and maternity care, and 914 visits in the In- fant and Child Health Supervision.

391/2 days, including the five days in the Conference, were spent in working with the parents of small children. At these visits there were many indications that the parents were following through on the recommendations made, and the number of defects corrected was notable.

The assistance and willing cooperation of Miss Helen Boden, the Board of Selectmen and Mrs. Carl Nelson and her committee, has played an important part in the success of this Community Health Program.

Respectfully submitted,

The Visiting Nurse Association of Springfield LORRAINE PROVOST, R. N.

FRED C. PHELPS Former Highway Superintendent

Fred C. Phelps who had for more than twenty- five years served as a Wilbraham Town Official retired from the office of Highway Superintend- ent at the end of 1947. His administration has typified the basic economy and sound common sense of which Wilbraham has been proud and which has at the same time produced a standard of highways equal to or better than those of similar communities.

Mr. Phelps is probably the only citizen of Wil- braham who still uses a fine yoke of oxen on his farm. A recent picture of Fred and his oxen is reproduced on the inside of the back cover of this Town Report.

The townspeople wish Mr. Phelps many years of healthful happiness.
