A LONG LIFE ENDED.


Chas. W. Crawford Dies in His 09th Year.


He Was an old aud Respected Oitizen.


Was Once Collector of Greene County. A Brief Sketch of Illa Life.


Charles W. Orswford died. yesterday morning about 7o'clock after an flinem of several weeks. His death was not a turprins' hod Sunday afternoon it .weq. known that his and was near. He was one of the oldest and most highly r+- spected citizens of Greene county and his death is greatly regretted by his friends throughout this section. His funeral will take place to-day at 3 o'clock. He will be buried in the fam- ily cemetery.


Clisrles W. Crawford was born Oeto- ber 14, 1625, and was. therefore, 69 years old. He was the son of Charles and Lucy (McNeil) Crawford. of Rob- ertoon county, Tennessee, where be was born and where ins parents rest. The deceased was educated in the pub- ; lic schools of Tennessee and at Walnut !i

academy in Robertson county. Much of bis life was devoted to school teach- ing. He first taught schoot in 1:32 und continued until 1-57 when be closed his last sebool in Cheatban county, Tennessee, and on april 28, of the same year he came . to this city which has practically been his home ever since. Soon after n.º arriva. here he married Sallie M., daughter of John Il. and Nancy M. (Hollandi Jermuizen and then went back to Tennesse but in November, 1-37, be came back to Springfield and remained with his father-in-law until June. 1858, when he went down to Washington county and took charge of a school there called Union institute which he conducted until 1861. In the first part of 1862 be came back to Springfield apd lived upon a farm until 1864 wber . be be- came clerk in the quarantine depart- ment of the United States army whose beadquarters were then in this city. He retained this position until the close of 'the civil war. After the war and uutil 1575 be was again engaged in teaching school. In 1871 be bought a farm two miles east of town and on the St. Louis road on which he has re- sided ever since and on which be died. Mrs. Crawford died in 1882, leaving slx boys and one girl. In 1980 he was elected collector of Greene county and filled the place to the satisfaction of all. A. B. Crawford, bis son, acted aa his deputy. Mr. Crawford was a Muson and a man of high standing and strict honor of late years his health has been bad and much of his time has been spent in traveling.
