Feb. 16, 1918 - Nelson Eggleston Kidder came to Wheeling in 1867 where he lived a few years and went 1 yr. to Michigan, but returned to Wheeling in 1879 and has lived in Wheeling and Chillicothe ever since. He is the father of Mrs. William Scruby. At the age of 19 yr. was in the Civil War. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Mar. 1918 - Mrs. Elizabeth Lake, age 88 yrs., died at home near Eversonville.


Mar. 15, 1918 - Walter J. Gould died at the Naval Hospital in France of pneumonia.


May 24, 1918 - Leon Norman and Miss Ruth Smiley were married at the home of the bride's parents in Wheeling.


Oct. 14, 1918 - Lee A. Green death. Soldier, member of the Rainbow division. Services held at Wheeling Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Snodgrass, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.

Nov. 30, 1918 - Frank Glasgow, former well known resident of Wheeling dies at 57 yrs. He left Wheeling several months ago.


Dec. 6, 1918 - Death of Floyd Wiley, son of Joel A. Wiley and Minnie was born at Chillicothe, Aug. 12, 1884. Survivors - one brother, Lieut. H. V. Wiley of U. S. Navy, one sister, Minnie Fay, one sister Zulah (Deceased) He was a Mason, Elk, MWA. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery from Baptist Church. Services conducted by Rev. Weddell.


Dec. 31, 1918 - C. S. Davis and Miss Ruth Lowe, both of Wheeling were married at the home of Rev. Boyd in Chillicothe. They will live in Wheeling.


1918 - Frank Bassett Jr., son of Frank and Alice Bassett died at the Great Lakes Naval training station of the influenza. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Mar. 1, 1919 - Miss Lulu Jeanette Narr and Buel E. Warren, both of Wheeling, were married Sat. at the home of officiating minister, Rev. J. N. Boyd. They will reside on a farm near Wheeling.


Apr. 25, 1919 - Death of Mrs. A. F. Bowen in the Chillicothe hospital where she had been two weeks. Death caused by diabetes Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


May 12, 1919 - Mrs. Celia Patterson, 63 yrs. wife of S. B. died.


Oct. 20, 1919 - Miss Minnie Smiley and Lawrence Ralston were married at the home of the bride's parents in Wheeling.


Nov. 3, 1919 - Elmer Bird dies suddenly of acute Bright's disease. He was born April 27, 1885, north of Wheeling, son of Harrison and Lydia Bird. June 17, 1916 he married Onita Brownfield in Chillicothe. He had four sisters, Mrs. Mattie Norman, Mrs. Hattie Warren, Mrs. May James and Mrs. Edgar Logan. Burial in Chillicothe Cemetery.


Jan. 30, 1920 - Jos. Seidel, Wheeling farmer, dead. He lived at his farm west of Wheeling for 28 years. He was bom in Prussia, Dec. 12, 1855. He lived in Livingston Co. since 1866. In 1892 he married Miss Mary Andres. He is survived by a brother, Frank of Chillicothe and a sister, Mrs. Mary Carlstead, Chillicothe. £ Funeral from Catholic Church, burial in Catholic Cemetery at Chillicothe.

Dec. 9, 1920 ?- Mrs. J. A. Collins the proprietor of that popular Hostelry, the Bowers House was surprised with a surprise party celebrating her 48th birthday.

Jan. 23, 1921 - Mrs. Sylvia Haynes, dies at 82. Husband died 9 yrs. ago. Came to Chillicothe short time in 1906. Native of New York. She lived in Michigan 21 yrs. before coming to Wheeling, Mo, Her first husband Augustus H. Ferris was killed in Civil War. She leaves 3 children, F. G. Ferris, Arthur W. Haynes and Mrs. Bertha Slagel. Services Wheeling Baptist Church, with burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Jan. 27, 1921 - Harriet Eliza Babb was born 1837 in Ohio and married Jacob Harlan, Sept. 8, 1856. They came to Missouri Oct. 1, 1856. Her companion passed away 1907, her eldest daughter Della Slocum, and in 1911 her daughter Maggie Botts joined their father in the land of love, leaving one daughter Lillian. Funeral at Christian Church.


Feb. 1921 - Jeanette Bassett age 6 yrs., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milo Bassett died at home in Wheeling. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Feb. 3, 1921 - Frank Rickett, 74 died at the home of his son Frank Rickett, Jr., 22 miles east of Wheeling, besides his son, 3 daughters survive, Mrs. Frank Thomas, Mrs. J.B. Patrick, and Mrs. Dudley Ewing, his wife died several years ago. Burial in Edgewood.


Mar. 11, 1921 - James Coucher died at his home in Wheeling, was 85. His wife of about the same age died 6 mo. ago, have no children, but have two stepchildren, one of whom is wife of Dr. Seibert, a well known Wheeling physician.


Mar. 3, 1921 - Marquis L. Gould, 25 and Miss Mavis S. Findlay, 22 married by Rev. Poage in his study.


Mar. 1921 - Mr. Everett C. Mckamey of Wheeling and Miss Orlene Peery married at home of bride west of Linneus.


Apr. 29, 1921 - Ethel Pearl (Finch) Wisehaupt passes. She was bom Dec. 15, 1883 and married L. A. Wisehaupt Nov. 21, 1906. She leaves 4 children, Gertrude, Pauline, Leonard and Lois. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


May 7, 1921 - Mrs. Carrie Snyder, widow of the late Fred Snyder. She and her late husband were pioneer residents of Wheeling township. Funeral in Wheeling, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Aug. 1921 - George Gould was selected for training at Camp Pike.


Sept. 4, 1921 - Joseph G. Hill, son of Ephram J. and Permelia C. Hill was born in Illinois Jan. 11, 1866. He married Anna Goff, June 4, 1885. Children, Joseph William died March 1912, Anna Mae Howe and Goldie Hill, Came to community in 1894. He was a triplet. Services held at Methodist Church.


Oct. 19, 1921 - Cecil Transue and Miss Jessie Jacobs were married at the Methodist Parsonage, Rev. Poage officiating.


Oct. 23, 1921 - Mr. Ralph Littrell of Meadville and Miss Eleanor Nay of North Wheeling, married at home of bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Justin Nay.


Oct. 30, 1921 - A girl born to Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Shiflet. Oct. 31, 1921 - A girl bom to Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Howe of north of Wheeling.


Nov. 1921 - Supt. Glick in receipt of letter from the State Dept. of Education stating that the Wheeling High School has been placed on the list of fully approved first class high schools. Three improvements should be made as soon as possible. 1 - enclose office at top of stairs. 2 - indoor closets should be installed as soon as they can be connected to the sewers. 3 - Secure additional 7th and 8th grade teacher to relieve over-crowded conditions.

Nov. 1921 - The Wheeling Star started operations last week, and the first edition was voted good by everyone.


Dec. 8, 1921 - Death comes to John Goff. He came to Wheeling Town- ship in 1892, lived on a farm south of Wheeling. Mrs. Goff died in 1894. They had four daughters, Mrs. Anna Hill, Mrs. Dora Hill, Mrs. Maria Jones, Mrs. Jim Adams. They had five sons, Charles, Wm., Fred, James and Henry. Mr. Goff contributed $18,000.00 to the Cameron College Scholarship Fund. Funeral was held at the Methodist Church, with burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Dec. 31, 1921 - Miss Ruby Seigrist of Chula and Ernest Littrell of Wheeling were married by Dr. Frank Fay in his home. They will farm near Wheeling.


Jan. 11, 192? - S. B. Patterson died in Medicine Township. He was born in Penn., Dec. 16, 1841, moved to Wheeling in 1882.


1922 - William Narr, 43, died at Chillicothe Hospital. Funeral will be at the home of his brother, Henry, in Wheeling. He also is survived by 2 sisters.


1922 - Romance on the rails. Enroute to K.C., Douglass Stewart played cupid between a pretty young woman who boarded a train at Cameron and Luther D. Boone. She is Miss Bertha Ellen Pearson.


22, 1922 - Death of Stephen A. Timmons. He was born in New Holland, Ohio, March 28, 1868. He came to this community 33 yrs. ago and married Miss Nettie Spooner, Dec. 30 Children are Leland, Gladys, Juanita and Mrs. Alta Lester. Among his brothers is B. G. Timmons of Wheeling.


Jan. 13, 1922 - Mrs. Sarah Davis celebrated her 99th birthday. She was born on the 13th and this birthday anniversary will fall on Friday the 13th. She resides 1 mile south of Wheeling and is the mother of Mrs. W. W. Edgerton of Chillicothe.


Feb. 15, 1922 - Death of Mrs. Sarah Davis, 99 yrs. of age, at her home near Wheeling. Miss Sarah Harpin was born in England, 1823, eldest of thirteen children. She married Wm. Davis, 1845. Two sons Cornelius and William were born in England. They sailed in 1852 from Liverpool to N.Y. They lived one-half mile south of Wheeling. Her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Edgerton was born 1872. William, the second son drowned in Lake Erie in 1870. Grandchildren, Cornelius J. Davis, Mrs. Ella Patric, and Mrs. Ethel Edgerton Welch.

Mar. 7, 1922 - Alice Norman, 76 yrs., widow of H. S. Norman, died at her home in Wheeling. She is survived by 3 children, A. E., and E. A. Norman and Elva Stewart, three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Kimmis, Edith Waite and Mrs. H. M. Morrison. She was born at Rockfort, Ill., Jan. 13, 1846, She moved to Wheeling in 1857. Funeral at Wheeling Methodist Church. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Mar. 13, 1922 - Horace M. Morrison died at his home in Wheeling. Resident for 55 yrs. Born in N.Y., April 14, 1844, came here 1867 and settled in Wheeling Township, He married Miss Jessie Jones April 9, 1870. Survived by Mrs. Nellie McLain and William Morrison. Funeral at the home, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Mar. 16, 1922 - Russell Charles Aye born at Bedford, March 12, 1898. He moved to Wheeling when five yrs. old. Was severly wounded in action in France, Sept. 28, 1918, from which he never recovered.


May 10, 1922 - Miss Susie Pearl Silver of Hale married Mr. Carl Renich Braun of Wheeling at home of Dr. Fay. reside on farm near Wheeling.

Jan. 1, 1923 - Mrs. John D. Fort died at her home in Wheeling on New Years Day. Nancy E. Hart was born Nov. 4, 1847 in Springfield, Ill., and came to Mo. in 1856. March 3, 1876 she married John D. Fort in Charleston, Kansas. Had 8 children, 7 living. Services at Wheeling Christia: Church. Husband died Dec. 26. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Jan. 14, 1923 - Horace P. Scruby born March 13, 1864 in Minn. He married Miss Anna Bishop who preceded him in death 22 years ago. They had one daughter and two sons, Mrs. Lillian Meinershagen, Ralph and Horace. Second wife, Mrs. Wallace.


Jan. 23, 1923 - Death of Mrs. Thomas M. Botts. She was daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Littrell, born May 15, 1857. In 1872 she married Thomas Botts (See Sept. 26, 1917)


Feb. 23, 1923 - Booth Thomas of Wheeling, age 68 yrs. 4 mo., 1 day died of pneumonia. Survived by widow, Mrs. Mary Thomas and children, C.H., Mrs. L. A. Vandavance and Mrs. O. A. Oliver.


Mar. 31, 1923 - Willard Ralston of Breckenridge and Miss Mable Harper of Wheeling were married in the home of Rev. Troy in Macon.


Apr. 14, 1923 - C. E. Utley and Miss Esther Narr, both of Wheeling, were married at courthouse in Chillicothe.


May 3, 1923 - Death of Edith I. Jones. Was born near Madison, Wisconsin, April 5, 1861. She married Warren C. Waite Jan. 1, 1882. Her husband died 28 yrs. ago. Children are Clarence E., Arthur L., Buel E., Mrs. Alma Hulbert, and Mrs. Beaulah Hedrick and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Morrison and Mrs. Gertrude Kimmis. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


July 8, 1923 - Susan M. Tompson dies at her home. Funeral in the home. Conducted by Rev. M. A. Kerr. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Aug. 1, 1923 - Death of Hattie James, born Feb. 10, 1870 in Ill. She married J. C. Beaird at Smithville, Ill., and moved to Wheeling Nov. 1900. Children, Mamie Arthaud, Arlie, Ella Cramner, Lalah Braun and Alonza. Funeral at the Christian Church, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


June 28, 1924 - Arlie Nace had a narrow escape when he drove onto the Medicine Creek Bridge with a truck load of feed for Tharp, Littrell and Co. Store. About mid-way the bridge gave way with him. The truck was damaged beyond repair. The bridge was known as old Collier's Bridge.


Feb. 27, 1924 - Clarence Raymond Warren of Wheeling and Miss Mabel Hosfield of Avalon were married at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Chillicothe. They will live on farm near Wheeling.


Dec. 31, 1924 - Jesse Brown of Wheeling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ett Brown and Miss May James, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex James married by Rev. Young in Chillicothe.

1925 - Death of J. H. Morrison. He was born Feb. 18, 1849 in Scotland. Children, Emma Belshe, James, Ralph, Cable and Nellie Morrison. Sisters, Mary, Rachael and Elizabeth. Three grandchildren, Misses Opal, Ruby and Garnet Belshe.


Jan . 5, 1925 - Rev. Pardonner born Dec. 4, 1841 in Penn. came to Wheeling when a young man, and taught school. He was then ordained as a minister by Rev. Wright, a Christian minister. He married Sue Barrett Oct. 8, 1868 at the home of the bride, northeast of Wheeling. Burial in Chillicothe Cemetery, where he was a merchant.


Feb. 1925 - Judge S. D. Rohrer officiated at four weddings during the day as follows: John F. Grimes, Chula and Cora Corzette of Wheeling; Charles Cverton Surber, Mead- ville and Cotis Lorain Goff, Wheeling; Otis Clyde Palmer, Woolsey, S.D., and Bertha Hurt, Chula; Thomas Lee Midgett and Clara Etta Bentley (colored) both of Meadville.


Feb. 11, 1925 - Death of Mrs. Jessie (Jones) Morrison at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie McClain. She was born in Wisconsin, July 26, 1853. She married Horace Morrison April 9, 1870. They resided on a farm north of Wheeling. They had a son, William and daughter, Nellie. Funeral in the home of her daughter, burial in Wheeling Cemetery. Moved to town March, 193.5.

Apr. 16, 1925 - George Botts dies at his home in Wheeling. He was born near Meadville, married Sarah E. Wiley, Feb. 3, 1975. They had one son Albert and daughter, Orpha Smiley, One brother J. J, Botts, two sisters, Jennie Level and Mary Allen. Funeral at Baptist Church, burial in Meadville Cemetery.


Apr. 17, 1925 - Mary E. (Lowry) Bailey, born Sept. 27, 1857, married E. T. Bailey May 27, 1910, who died October, 1924. Funeral was at Parson Creek Church, Rev. J. W. Trower conducting. Burial in Ogan Cemetery.


May 3, 1925 - Miss Gladys Harvey bride of Mr. Arley D. Mace at home of bride's parents.


June 14, 1925 - Mr. Edward Pahmeyer and Miss Mae Walby of Wheeling wed at home of Baptist minister in Meadville.


July 1, 1925 - Miss Frances Talbott and Mr. Dorrest Sensenich wedding took place at high noon at home of Rev. Dr. Fay.


July 6, 1925 - George T. (Coon) Brant and Mrs. Josina E. Walker of Wheeling were married at court house by Judge Rohrer.


Aug. 30, 1925 - LaVerne DeWitt and Miss Opal Harris were married in the home of Rev. Trower.


Sept.13, 1925 - Robert Henry Warren died, age 2 yrs. 6 mo. He was son of Buel Warren and Lulu Narr Warren.


Dec. 10, 1925 - Death of Anna May James, wife of Eli James, She was the daughter of Harry and Lydia Bird. They had one daughter and two sons. Services at Wheeling Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Munyon.


Dec. 20, 1925 - Mr. William Henry Sanson and Miss Viva Ann Watson, both of Wheeling were married in the Baptist Church.


Dec. 22, 1925 - Lewis Ertle dies at the home of his brother-in-law, J. D. Warren. He was born Jan. 16, 1856. His parents settled north of Wheeling and later moved into town where his mother died. Among his nieces and nephews are Mrs. Joe Smiley and Mont Warren. Services were held at Wheeling Baptist Church, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Jan. 1926 - Mrs. Lester Arthaud dies after a long illness. She leaves her husband and three children. Body was taken to Kansas for burial.


Feb. 4, 1926 - Death of Capitola Glore. Born March 30, 1863 in Boone County, Ky., married July 31, 1889 to Sherman Albertson. They had two sons, who died. Survivors include two sisters, Lota and Carrie Glore. Funeral from Baptist Church by Rev. J. W. Trower, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Feb. 10, 1926 - John B. Walby, born Jan. 10, 1844, in Illinois. In 1867 married Catherine McCeary. Their children, James, John, Wesley, Ozella Roe, Lydia and Lavina. His wife died in 1908. He married Mrs. Nancy (Harrand) Christ, March 12, 1912. He was buried in Wheeling Cemetery.


Mar. 9, 1926 - Miss Elois Spooner and Walter Cooper married at Brookfield.


Mar. 24, 1926 - Arthur M. (Jack) Love and Miss Myrtle Higgins were married at the Meadville parsonage with J. W. Trower officiating. They will reside in Wheeling.


Mar. 25, 1926 - Charles Tanner and Miss Thyra Morrison were married Thanksgiving morning at home of bride's parent's in St. Louis.

Apr. 27, 1926 - Death of A. D. Gage, 77 yrs. old. Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bassett. He was one of the first settlers of Wheeling. He married Miss Fannie Scruby and they had four sons, Frank, Edd, Horace, Henry and four daughters, Ada, Lela, Bessie and Florence Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Apr. 28, 1926 - Miss Nellie Kinsella died at Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was daughter of Mina A. and she had two brothers, Joe and Leonard. She was 18 years of age. Burial at Leopolis.


June 5, 1926 - Geo. T. Smith dies at 90 yrs. of age. He was a member of G.A.R. 's.


June 1926 - Death of John A. Collins in Brookfield. He had been a resident of Wheeling many years. He and his wife operated the Bower House Hotel several years. He had two children, May and Cofer. (Mrs. John Collins died Aug. 17, 1946)


July 29, 1926 - Monday afternoon, as Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Dimitt and their daughter, Misses Emma and Bertie were returning home from Chillicothe, they ran into another car and Mrs. Dimitt was thrown through the windshield and cut very badly about the face.


July 12, 1926 - Mr. James Spencer Harris, 20, Meadville and Miss Vera Leveta Arthaud, 18, were married last night in Hale by Rev. Erquart. They will live on farm south of Meadville.


Aug. 7, 1926 - Death of Sabra Sprinkle Smiley, mother of Henry Irl Smiley. She was born June 9, 1866 and married Robert Smiley Dec. 24, 1884.


Oct. 3, 1926 - Mrs. Louretta Gish died at her home 2 miles north of Wheeling. Widow of late Geo. W. Gish and was daughter of Jane and Elijah Harvey. She was born Oct. 11, 1840, married Aug. 13, 1868 to Geo. W. Gish, who died in 1901. Children are, Alice Shiflet of Caldwell, Kans., Walter Gish, Riverside, Calif., Geo. J.P. Gish of Minden Mines, Mo., one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Spencer of St. Louis.


Nov. 24, 1926 - Miss Ruth Evelyn Tompkins weds Mr. Ralph Marsell Pfander at home of Rev. Brengle.


Dec. 7, 1926 - James Henry Collins dies at Linneus. He lived in Wheeling from 1890 until 1905. He was in the mercan- tile business here. Besides his wife, he is survived by 5 dau., Mrs. D.P. Carlyle, Mrs. W. E.Beat, Mrs. L.O. McKee, Ora and Mrs. Wm. Chapman. He married Miss Lula Patterson Feb. 17, 1857 in Ken. (She died in 1929)


Dec. 25, 1926 - James Sanual Gish, born near Wheeling, Feb. 28, 1860 is dead. He spent his early life on his father's farm north of Wheeling. In 1880, he graduated from a St. Louis Medical School, now Washington U. He practiced medicine in Liberal 44 yrs. Married Miss Mary Babb in 1883, who died Sept. 1915. In Aug. 1917, he married Miss Dora E. Thomas.


Jan. 7, 1927 - Death of J. F. Harper, born at Warsaw, Indiana, 64 yrs. ago. He married Miss Mattie Hoyt. Children are Clyde, Nellie Dimitt, Mable Ralston and Miss Mary Harper. Three sisters. He lived in Wheeling 23 yrs. Funeral at Methodist Church, burial in Wheeling Cemetery. The 3 sisters are Mary E. Vanhoff, Mrs. Will Beever and C. S. Hoy, one step-brother W. W. Wilkerson,


Jan. 19, 1927 - Ella May (Arnold) Dimitt died at her home near Wheeling, which they fenced out of the praries. She was born 3 miles Northeast of Wheeling, just over the line into Linn Co., Sept. 19, 1860. She married Geo. R. Dimitt, Nov. 23, 1881. Services held at Christian Church, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


Feb. 1, 1927 - Mother of Charley Shafer of Wheeling dies. Miss Rebecca Painter was born May 20, 1855 - married Frederick Henry Shafer March 18, 1875. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


1927 - Robert Stevenson, oldest son of J. T. and Mary Stevenson, was born March 18, 1871. In 1900 he married Miss Mary Olive Halsey. Children, Delbert, Samuel. Robert Jr., Willis and Evert; One brother, Fred and two sisters, Mrs. Hester DeVaul and Mrs, Clara Steers. Funeral at Eversonville Church, conducted by Rev. John Drinkard, burial in Wheeling Cemetery.


May 30, 1927 - Thomas L. Warren, age 72 died at his home in Wheeling. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth ( Darling) Warren and five children: Mrs. Stella Rice, Hazel, Roy, Clinton and Clarence, one sister, Mrs. Ella Shoab, four brothers, J. D., W. L., Homer and George.


July 14, 1927 - Death of Frank Stevenson, youngest son of Thomas. Death due to operation of appendix that proved to be gall stones. He lived south of Eversonville. He had two brothers, Fred and Robert, two sisters, Hester DeVaul and Clara Steers. He married Miss Raney.


1927 - Elbert P. Sallee and Miss Grace L. Tharp were married in Linneus.


July 15, 1927 - Death of Mrs. Eva Littrell, wife of J. E. Littrell, age 53. She was born in Grand River township, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Harris, Oct. 9, 1892, married J. Ed. Littrell, member of Wheeling Christian Church. where services were held by Rev. A. Munyon. Burial in Wheeling Cemetery. Survivors are two sons, Buel E. and Ernest A. Littrell and the husband, 4 sisters, Mrs. Bertha Sensenich, Mrs. Ethel Tompkins, Mrs. Gertrude Beaird and Mrs. Myrtle Bowen and one brother, Harvey Harris.
