It would be fuperfluous in the Editor to make any comments, but will content himfelf in the confcioufnefs of having deferved well of his country, and convinced that, in future, he cught to poffefs the fame ftanding in the public mind.
The number of names in the Directory has been gradually increafing for feveral years past, during which time the price has been the fame : 'Thisincreafe, together with the confiderable additions made to the Regif- ter, the Editor trusts will be fufficient to justify the increased price of . one fhilling .- The Bankrupt Law alone, which is this year inferted in it, is a saving of Is. 6d. and it is what every merchant must, at times, have recourfe to.
There are many streets that are not numbered, and others fo imper- factly as to make it impofsible, to furnifh any accurate information of the refidence of their inhabitants.
Among the streets recently formed, are feveral of fimilar names to others in the city-this is an evil of great magnitude, and a means of much inconvenience refulting on the public, if not corrected .- The Editor, therefore, thinks it his duty to remark on the propriety of the Corporation's being invested with fuch authority (if it does not already poffel's it) as will enable it to regulate a matter which is of fo much public importance .- I will take the liberty to obferve, that 'tis time the citizens of N. York fhould difplay taste even in giving names to streets.
Catharine-lane, is a fmall street running from the Collect, parallel and next to L. Catharine, and it is neceffary to be careful in feeking a perfon, not to confound'either of thefe with the street ufually known by the name of Catharine.
Barley, at prefent, is fuppofed to run from Rofe-street, crofs Broad. way, and there meet the street formerly known by that name, which comes from the North-river. Note .- From Rofe to Broadway is not numbered, and is fometimes called Thomas.
That part of Reed-ftreet, South-Eaft of Broadway is at prefent called. Upper Recd.
The Oliver-Street which is the continuation of Delancey, is that defige natid Upper Oliver.
A finall avenue near the Collect, recently opened and running part of the way to Broadway, is called Republic-lane.
Obferve the following general rule (which admits of but few exceptions ) for finding the numbers of the houfes in the different ftreets of this city. In thofe ftreets that run from the oldeft part of the city, fay Whitehall, the number commences at the end, except fuch ftreets as commence in the centre of the city, where the number likewife commence.

tle confequence, and with a view to amufe his patrons, he Has inferted the following tale : .
A very honest gentleman was one day accosted by one of his friends, who, taking him by the hand, exprefled uncommon fatisfaction at fee- ing him abroad, and in good health, after the dangerous and portentous malady he had undergone. Surprifed at this falutation, the gentleman replied, it was true, he had been a little out of order over night, but there was nothing extraordinary in his indifpofition. ''Jefu ! not ex- traordinary !"" cried the other, " when you vomited three black crows." This strange exclamation the gentleman, at first, mistook for raillery ; but, feeing all the marks of fincerity in his friend, who was, in reality, no joker, he fuddenly changed his opinion, and, taking him afide, ad- drefled him thus: "My dear friend, I am on the eve of marriage with a lady to whom I am warmly attached ; but, as no woman in her fenfes would connect berfelf with a man who had a rookery in his bowels, I am fully perfuaded that this affair of the three black crows, is a sto- ry of my rival's invention, calculated to injure me ; therefore, I must infist on your informing me who is the author of this frandalous report." Ifis friend, who thought the demand very reafonable, without any befitation, told him that he was made acquainted with the circumstance by Mr. Such-a-one, their common acquaintance ; upon which the gene tleman who thought himfelf injured, went immediately in quest of his fuppoled defmer, and, having found him, " Pray, Sir," faid he, pe- remptorily, " who told you that I vomited three black crows ??? " Three ?" anfwered the gentleman; "I mentioned but two." -- " Zounds! Sir," cried the other, incenfed at his indifference, "you will find the two too many if you refufe to difcover the author of this calumny." The gentleman, though furprifed at his heat, immediately zuformed him of the perfon who told him the story .- Away posted our hero, and, with evident marks of difpleafure, attacked the accufed with, " well, Sir, I am come to pluck those two black crows." The de- fondant, feeing the other's irritation, pofitively denied that he had mene tioned a brace. " One, indeed, I own I took notice of, and upon the authority of your phyfician, who gave me the account this morning." """ By the Lord!" cried the fufferer, in a rage, " that rafcal has been fuborned by iny rival to flander my character in this inanner, that he might profit himfelf through my misfortune." He had fcarce pro- nounced thefe words, when the doctor entered the room. "Sirrah, ?? cried his exafperated patient, " if I live, I'll make that black crow the blackeft circumstance of thy life and converfition." The phyfician, confounded at this addrefs, affured him that he was utterly ignorant of h's meaning ; and, when the gentleman explained it, abfolutely denied the charge, affirining that he had faid no more than that he had vomited something as black as a crow. The landlord of the houfe acknowledged that he might have been miftaken, and thus the whole myftery was ex- plained.
