WAUSAU. A flourishing city of 10 .- 000 people is located on both banks of the Wisconsin river, in the center of Marathon county and near the geographical center of the State, 157 miles northwest of Mil- waukee and 100 miles west of Lake Michi- ran, by way of Oconto and Sturgeon Bay. It has two lines of railway, the Valley di- vision of the C., M. & St. P., which ex- tends northward to Minocqua and is soon to be completed to Lake Superior, and the M., L. S. & W. which connects the great lakes with the Northwestern railroad sys- tem. It has a court house, soon to be re- placed by one of the finest structures for judicial and county purposes in the State, which is now in course of construction. It is the commercial center of northern and central Wisconsin, and contains six large saw mills, while there are over fifty in the
county adjacent to the city. An immense business is done in lumber of all grades, pine and hardwood, about 300,000.000 feet being the output of last year. Big Bull Falls, at this point on the river, affords an easily utilized and unlimited water power, the fall in the river being over twenty feet. Across the brink of the main fall stretches the beautiful and substantial steel bridge of the M., L. S. & W. Ry. The city contains the immense sash, door and blind factory of Curtis Bros. & Co. and the Werheim factory, two fine flouring mills, two foundries and machine shops, two tan- neries, three planing mills, a large box factory, two breweries, four large hotels and numerous smaller but well conducted hostelries. There is a good high school, eight ward schools, a business and com- mercial college, and five parochial schools. The leading religious denominations are represented by the Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist, and there are sixteen church edifices. The city is provided with a fine system of water- works, that supply as pure water as can be found at the famous health resorts; also a good system of sewerage, a gas and electric light plant. The business por- tion of the city is substantially built of brick and stone, and there are many fine residences, varying in value from $5,000 to $75,000 ; a $50,000 opera house and numerous fine public halls, a city hall and two fine engine houses ; an electric system of fire alarms, and an efficient fire department. There are five weekly news- papers published, the Torch of Liberty, the Central Wisconsin and the Pilot Review in the English language, and the Pionier and the Wochenblatt in the German. The shipments are extensive and comprise lumber, lath, shingle, pickets, railroad ties, tanbark and manufactured articles in lumber and granite. There is a gold, silver and galena mine on the northern border of the city, now being successfully devel- oped. The county has no bonded deb !. and the assessed valuation is $5,072.033. Tel., W. U. Exp., Am. and U.S. Three mails daily. A. W. Young, postmaster.
