WAUKESHA. The county seat of Waukesha county, is situated in a beauti- ful and fertile valley, surrounded on either side with gradually ascending hills. The
streets are laid out regularly and lined with double rows of shade trees. It is an important town, situated on the Little Fox river, 16 miles west of the city of Milwau- kee. There are three railroads in success- ful operation, the C., M. & St. P. Ry, the C. & N. W., and Wisconsin Central, the latter having erected their shops here, giving employment to several hundred men, with a monthly pay roll of about $20,000. The chief interests of the town are its mineral springs, the healing properties of whose waters have brought Waukesha into world- wide prominence, and have obtained for it the title of the "Saratoga of the West." The shipment of the water in barrels and in a carbonated state have reached immense proportions. The first spring discovered more than fifty years ago is the Wankesha Mineral Rock Spring. Within twenty years, however, the Bethesda, Silurian, White Rock, Hygeia, Glenn Acme, Horeb, Arcadian, Clysmic, and quite lately, the Sotarian Spring, have come into existence, the last named shipping water all over this country and Europe. In order to accom- modate the numerous visitors that arrive during the summer months, numerous and large hotels and boarding houses have been built; among others may be mentioned the Fountain Spring House, Ville View Hotel. the Spring City Hotel. Hyde Park and Park Hotels, American, National and Grand Ave Hotels. The manufacturing interests are represented by a carriage factory, a flour mill, a planing mill and a brewery. The town has inexhaustible and valuable stone quarries, the Hadfield quarry being one of the largest in the State. There are 2 banks, the National Exchange and the National, and 2 good opera houses. The public schools are of a superior order. District School No. 1, on Hadfield's addi- tion, is a fine and large building and Waukesha is proud of its excellent chools and able corps of teachers. nection. Three ably edited papers, the Freeman, the Democrat and the Journal, are published, and each has a good circula- tion. Waukesha has a well equipped fire department, lodges of the various secret and benevolent societies. Many handsome business blocks, which have been erected this season, testify to the constant growth and prosperity of the city.
