SUPERIOR. This rapi lly increasing city, the judicial seat of Douglas county, is located at the west end of Lake Super- ior, on the C. St. P. & O. Ry. the Wiscon- sin division of the N. P. R. R., the east- ern division of the G. N. Ry, the D. S. S. & A. Ry., and the S. P. & D. R. R., 320 miles. air line, northwest of Milwaukee, 150 northwest of St. Paul, and just across the bay from Duluth, Minn., with which it is connected by half-hourly ferry boats and two railroad bridges. The Wisconsin Central Line aud the M., L. S. & W. Ry, enter the city via the N. P. R. R. from Ashland and the cast. Superior embraces the plats of East Superior and West Super- ior each having its own postoffice and sev. eral other plats, all covering an area of about 39 square miles, on a level plateau. The plat of South Superior has been Intely added and several large manufactories are being built on this addition. It is laid out on a liberal scale, with broad streets and
avenues, and fronts on the capacious and land-locked deep harbor bays of Superior, St. Louis and Allouez. It contains Catho- lic, Baptist, Congregational, Methodist, Presbyterian, Methodist Episcopal, Epis- copal, Norwegian, Swedish Lutheran churches, 8 public school buildings, with several more in course of construction. S banks, 3 large saw mills, 3 planing mills, iron works, 3 brick yards, machine shops, steel barge works, forge works, 2 breweries, immense coke ovens, 4 exten- sive coal docks, the largest on the lakes, with a capacity of 2.500,000 tons, the re- ceipts for 1859 amounting to 720.000 tons, several merchandise docks. 5 grain eleva- tors, with a capacity of 8,500,000 bushels, the receipts for 1889 being nearly 10,000,- 000 bushels, and the wheat shipments 6,387,443 bushels, while the minor branch- es of commerce and the learned professions have a thorough representation. The city is lighted by gas and electricity, has both Bell and Cushman telephone systems, 3 miles of electric street railway, 10 miles of direct pressure water mains, a well equipped and efficient fire department. supported by steam fire tugs, 2 daily and 7 weekly newspapers, first class hotels and all the appointments and facilities of a modern commercial metropolis. The growth of the city within the last 3 years has been almost phenomenal. The cost of buildings and improvements in that time amounting to nearly $8.000.000. New buildings are going up both in the busi- ness and residence portions of the city. fresh manufactories are locating here and old ones enlarging their capacity. The price of real estate is steadily advancing. and the outlook for the future is all that could be desired even by its most earnest and sanguine well.wishers.
