WHITEWATER. An incorporated city on the P. du C. div. of the C., M. & St. P. Ry, and on a small tributary of Bark river, in the northwestern part of Walworth county, 33 miles by rail and 18 by stage route from Elkhorn, the county seat, 51 southwest of Milwaukee, and 136 northwest of Chicago. Among the more important manufactories of the town may be mentioned the Esterly Harvesting Ma- chine Co, employing about 500 men ; mower and feed mill factories, 2 flour mills, a paper mill, a cheese box factory, a planing mill and a brewery. The pro- ducts of the above, with live stock and country produce, form the shipments. The surrounding country has many cheese and butter factories, Whitewater being one of the greatest shipping points in Wiscon- sin for cheese, butter and eggs. There are 11 churches, Episcopal, Congregational, Methodist Episcopal, Baptist, Catholic, Universalist, 2 Lutheran and 3 Methodist. The educational facilities consist of the State Normal School with an attendance of 500, and 2 good public schools. Two weekly newspapers, the News and the Register, keep the citizens informed on all current topics of interest, and enjoy a good patronage. The city also has 2 banks, a public hall, an opera house having a seating capacity of 1000, 4 hotels a ,and number of handsome and substantial business blocks and private residences, and a complete system of electric light and water works. Stages daily to Fort Atkin- son ; fare, 75 cents; and tri-weekly to Elk- horn; fare, $1. Improved land in the im- mediate vicinity is worth from $40 to $75 per acre. No bonded debt. Exp .. Adams.
