VIROQUA. First settled in 1831, and incorporated in 1885, is a thriving city in Viroqua township, Vernon county, of which it is the judicial seat. It is on the C., M. & St. P. Ry, 32 miles from Sparta and 202 from Milwaukee. The surround- ing country is very fertile, and considera- ble shipments are made of grain, live stock, wool, hoop poles and railway ties. The city has a machine shop, axe handle factory, 3 churches, Methodist Congregational and Christian; high and graded schools, a private bank, a pub- lic library of 1,000 volumes, and a public hall seating 800. Two weekly newspa- pers, the Vernon County Censor and the . Vernon County Leuder, are published. The city is supplied with water works.
