Meningitis Fatal To Onyx Resident

An Onyx woman died March 6 of meningitis, according to Kern County Medical Officer, Dr. Leon M. Heber- tson, M.D.

Dorothy Brown, 69, was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield, prior to her death. Dr.

"The. reported meningitis cases county-wide are typical for this time Hebertson said he did not believe the ' of year and we must remember that Brown case and another meningitis case from Kernville were related.

Susan Stevenson, a teacher at Ker- nville Elementary School is recuperating from type-B meningococcal meningitis, a serious disease which put her in the intensive care unit of Mercy Hospital in Baker- sfield and prompted school officials in Kernville to send warning notes to parents.

"We have not yet positively iden- tified the exact type of meningitis in the Brown case. It takes sophisticated equipment to determine the exact meningitis type and tests are still un-

derway but I doubt very much that this second case is the same type and I feel it is another isolated case and not connected to the Kernville illness," Hebertson said.

there are many kinds of meningitis. Meningitis is .like saying groceries .... we must then determine what kind of groceries," Hebertson explained.

Dr. Hebertson also stressed that he has no reason to think ,meningitis is anywhere near epidemic stage

anywhere in Kern County and that in- cludes the Kern River Valley. .

According to a family spokesman, Susan Stevenson is recovering nicely at her home in Kernville. No date for her return to the classroom has been set.
