CARLSBAD.

A prosperous and growing town, the county seat of Eddy coun- ty, is located in the southwestern part of the famous Pecos Valley, on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Ry., 75 miles south of Roswell. The surrounding country, under the ditches of the Pecos Irrigation Co., is exceptionally fertile even for New Mexico, making farming most profitable and fruit raising at its best. Stock raising is one of the principal industries of this section, making Carlsbad the supply point of a large range of country. A very salubrious climate, with abundance of large shade trees and cool nights, together with the mineral springs, make this place a favorite health resort. Carlsbad has two substantial banking institutions and extensive business and commercial firms, good hotels, a handsome court house and a number of substantial brick blocks; churches of the most promi- nent religious denominations. a city and state hospital with com- petent attendants; a water work system which furnishes the finest pure, cold water; water power sufficient to give Carlsbad the foun- dation of manufacturing center; a telephone exchange, connected also wit .. the whole irrigated district; bottling works for its min- . eral springs, whose waters, quite varied in their composition, are as a rule, very favorable to the cure of chronic stomach and kidney troubles; schools and school buildings that are equal to those of any Eastern section; a commercial and social club with large mem- bership of enterprising business men, who believe in Carlsbad, Ed- dy county and the Pecos Valley and want others to know of their worth and have a share in their growth and prosperity. Population 3,000. Altitude 3,121 feet.
