County seat of Curry county, on the A., T. & S. F. Ry., 103 miles from Roswell and 109 miles from Amarillo, Texas. Clovis is the freight and passenger point on three divisions of the Santa Fe; the Chicago-Pacific transcontinental line: the Galveston division and the Pecos Valley line. It is the largest railroad center in New Mex- ico, with a monthly payroll of $75,000. It has the Santa Fe machine shops, the largest west of Topeka, which employs approximately 500 men, an ice plant of 125 tons daily capacity, a modern two-story depot, one of the largest Fred Harvey hotels and eating houses which cost $100,000, and a Santa Fe Hospital, which cost $125.000, a new $75,000 high school building. It has municipally owned elec- tric lights, water works, sewerage and other modern conveniences. Clovis is the gateway from the lower to the upper plains country. It is also the gateway into New Mexico and to the famous Pecos Valley. It is a big trading point of a thickly settled farming and stockraising section. It is also a large shipping point for Hereford cattle, the stock that makes Curry county famous, While stock- raising leads as the most important industry, wheat is a close sec- ond, with broom corn and hogs coming next. Crop failures here are unknown. The business men and citizens here are good, enter- prising people. Population 6,000. Altitude 4,200 feet.
