The county seat of Mckinley county, is an im- portant supply point for stockmen and Indians, and is surrounded by the most important coal mining dis- tricts in New Mexico. On the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Ry., 159 miles west of Albuquerque and '20 miles east from the Arizona line. Division point on A., T. & S. F. Ry., now erecting new shop, depot, Harvey House, etc., a a cost of $1,500,000. Navajo blanket making is a great industry: among the In- dians and Gallup is the headquarters for this trade. Oil has been found in quantities near here and it will undoubtedly develop into one of the big industries of the new state and Gallup will have an abundant sup- ply of natural gas. The coal mining towns of Alli- son, Navajo, Heaton and Gibson are directly tribu- tary and in fact their industries belong to Gallup. The surroundings are unusally picturesque and the climate healthful. Gallup is well governed, has good schools and churches, electric lights, sewers, sub- stantial business blocks and a progressive business people. Population over 5,000 and rapidly growing. Altitude 6,500 feet.
