DEMING.
Deming, county seat of Luna county, is a town of about 5,000 population, 88 miles west of El Paso, in the center of the Mimbres Valley, a region noted for its fertility, the healthfulness of its cli- mate, and the wonderful purity and abundance of its water. It has more railroads than any other town in New Mexico, and Luna coun- ty has over twice the railroad mileage, proportionate to its size, of any other county in the State. The following railroads make junc- tion in Deming: Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and El Paso & Southwestern.
In the past the town was largely supported by the cattle and mining interests. Within the past few years, however, farming is overshadowing every other interest. There are in the neighborhood of. 200,000 acres of rich, level irrigable lands adjacent to Deming; and this tremendous area is being developed by means of pumping water for irrigation. There are now 300 pumping plants ranging in capacity from 500 to 2,000 gallons per minute within a radius of fifteen miles. . Water is pumped at tremendous profit for raising alfalfa, beans, corn, milo maize, kaffir corn, Irish potatoes, garden truck of every description, and fruit of all kinds excepting citrus fruits. Luna county assists its farmers with an agricultural expert from the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Rural free delivery and rural telephones are appreciated by the farmers.
The Mimbres Valley is an ideal location for a home. It com- bines a healthful climate with the purest water supply in America, the best schools in New Mexico, and a thoroughly American and pro- gressive population. Has a canning factory, a flour mill, a $40.000 high school building, a $40,000 court house, a sanitary sewer system costing $38,000 has been installed. There are 20 miles of cement sidewalks in the town. Six denominations have churches and active congregations. A wholesome moral atmosphere prevails in the town. A State Armory erected and maintained.
The value of land for production has been tested and land

values steadily increase. There is an active Chamber of Commerce interested in advertising the resources of the valley. As a result, the people are coming in, building homes and developing farms. So far, the very best class of American citizenship has been attracted. The altitude of Deming above sea level is 4,300 feet, and the exceeding dryness of the atmosphere and almost perpetual sun- shine and pure water make it an ideal location from the standpoint of health.
