Las Vegas, the business center for northeastern New Mexico, is the coun- ty seat of San Miguel county, one of the largest and most important sub- divisions of the state. San Miguel county has a population of 34,756, and an assessed valuation of about $20,000,000. It is an important stock and farm- ing county: its dry farms produce every year immense quantities of wheat. oats, corn and all the grains, as well as the pinto beans which are making New Meicxo famous and their producers prosperous; its irrigated lands are prolific in alfalfa and the similar crops; its ranges fatten steers and sheep, which bring money into the pockets of cattle and wool growers; its moun- · tains produce timber in immense quantities, and are known to bear minerals of value; it marks the dividing point of the mountains and the plains, and is filled with places of scenic wonder and grandeur; its altitude varies from 12.000 feet in the higher mountains to 4,000 feet on the plains; its annual rainfall is 19 inches, so distributed as to be of best advantage to the farmer; it still contains large acreages of public domain subject to homesteading.
Las Vegas derives its name from early Spanish days, when it was christened by a band of explorers who were impressed with the beauty of its location. The name means "The Meadows," and is descriptive of the location of the city, which lies surrounded by hills, in the midst of a beautiful valley. The altitude is 6,383 feet. The city lies at the foot of one of the grandest mountains in the Southern Rockies, at the gateway to a country of great scenic attractiveness. Because of its splendid summer climate and the ex- cellent fishing, hunting and camping grounds in the vicinity, Las Vegas is much sought after by vacationists. Its winter climate is notable for its sunshine and mild weather; such cold weather as comes is invigorating, be- cause of the dryness of the air.
Dry air, coolness in summer and sunshine in winter combine to make Las Vegas an ideal health resort, especially for those suffering from tuber- onlar troubles. The city has a large sanitarium and hospital to care for those who need those facilities.
Las Vegas is known as the educational capital of New Mexico. It is the seat of the New Mexico Normal University, an institution which is of high anding. It is especially attractive to teachers of other states who wish take summer courses in a cool climate. A Baptist University. the only hool of its kind in the state. has been established at the Las Vegas Hot prings, five miles northwest of Las Vegas on a branch line of the Santa railway, in the midst of one of the beauty spots of the southwest and rrounded by mineral springs of known medicinal value. A good high 1001 and excellent city and parochial schools are operated in adequate ildings.
Las Vegas is the third city in size in New Mexico. It has 10,000 people. is 111 miles south of Raton and 132 miles north of Albuquerque, on the main e of the Santa Fe. of which it is the headquarters of the New Mexico ision. with large shops and terminals. Las Vegas is located on the Santa trail, the transcontinental auto road, and is the New Mexico terminal of A Ozark Trail. It is a modern city, with storm and sanitary sewer sys- ms, electric street cars, paved streets. ornamental lighting system, pure Mountain water. annual Chataugna. twelve churches representing all prin- cipal denominations, twenty-three fraternal organizations, four banks with over $2.500.000 deposits, five newspapers (one daily), three building and loan associations. Carnegie library, Y. M. C. A. building. Elks' club costing $50.000. armory. opera house. mineral hot springs and mountain resorts located near city. active Commercial club. Masonic temple, large wholesale and jobbing houses. extensive lime kilns and lumber mills, two flouring mills, brick yards, stone quarries, oil drilling in progress in immediate vicinity with pros- Prets of success. good hotels and restaurants, free camp ground. Harvey hotel, foundry and machine shops, numerous modern garages, telephone sys- tem. railway hospital, planing mills, ice plant. Irrigation project watering 12.000 acres just completed, all lands within six miles of the city. Other irrigation projects to be completed in next few years will water 40,000 acres.
Site has been purchased for federal building. City maintains public play- grounds, and four beautiful parks. Las Vegas is the home of the famous New Mexico Cowboys Reunion Association, which stages a real western roundup every July. The climate is admirable, offering a natural specific for tuber- cular. bronchial and malarial trouble, brain far and general breakdown from overwork. There is abundant opportunity for investors. Land in Las Vegas' vicinity is selling at less than other sections of the southwest, yet is plo- ducing at a rate that would be profitable on a heavier investment.
Inquiries about Las Vegas and the surrounding country will be answered gladly by the
