The county seat of Union county and most important town in northeastern New Mexico, is located on the Colorado & Southern Railroad, 10 miles west of the dividing line between New Mexico and Texas: Surrounded by an extensive stock raising and farming country, ' Clayton furnishes supplies to a wide range of country. Here the Federal land office for the northeastern part of New Mexico is situated. It has municipal electric light and water works; a tel- ephone system. a splendid public school system and a fine public school building: Baptist, Methodist, Christian and Catholic churches. a number of secret societies. many business establishments and con- tains many nice homes. From here 2.000,000 pounds of wool, 160 car loads of cattle. 400 car loads of sheep and 1.000 cars of grain products are shipped annually. There is a first class hotel in town: a $50,000 court house. four weekly newspapers. two in English and two in English and Spanish. are published in town. Coal deposits are being worked in a small way nearby. Clayton is fortunate in having active, energetic, progressive business men who believe in the future of their city and are willing to do for its best interests. Population 3,000.
