JONES' COMMERCIAL COLLEGE.
the time required in our best schools and colleges. All the branches of Mathematics are taught in this Institution, together with Natural Philosophy, Astronomy, Mechan- ics and English Grammar.
Any person wishing iustruction in any or all of the above-named branches, will save time and expense by patronizing this Institution, as the mode of imparting in- struction is peculiarly adapted to the development of the reasoning powers-so that the student commences to reason when he begins to study the science of numbers. All propositions in this Institution are worked on the purely analytical method, which is the only true system of teaching mathematics. 'T'he cancelliug method is also combined with the analytical in this Institution, by which nearly every propo- sition of any length may be solved without one-eighth part of the figures that are used in the ordinary method of calculation. All propositions are worked on the black-board, and explained by lectures and demonstrations so that the student is guided by reason; instead of an intricate rule that he has committed to memory, each student has to demonstrate his proposition as he works it ; and it must be ex- plained so critically that every one in his class can thoroughly comprehend it, though they were entirely ignorant of the problem when it was commenced. Hence, the mind of every student is greatly developed by this method of impartiug instruction- and so thorough is the knowledge gained, that the student will have no difficulty in applying his calculations to the daily business transactions of life.
I especially invite all persons wishing instructions in Mathematics, as well as those having children to educate, and all lovers of learning, to call and witness boys from the age of nine to sixteen years, solve the most difficult problems in Mathematics in the shortest possible time. Spectators are privileged to present any problem at any time, for immediate solution by some one of the pupils under the age of eighteen years.
Mr. Stewart has opened a School for young Ladies in Mathematics and com- petent assistants have been obtained ;- rooms on the first floor, entirely separate from the Gentlemen's department. The Evening Session to commence the first of October.
Mr. S. will give $100 to any teacher in the State of Missouri who will present a pupil, of his own teaching, that will excel one of Mr. Stewart's (whom he may select, under the age of eighteen years,) in Mathematics, in a public examination --- the pupils to examine each other. No problem to be presented unless the one who presents it can work it himself. The teacher may assist his pupil, and Mr. Stewart will remain silent.

GENERAL INTELLIGENCE.
From numerous communications, of similar import, received during the last two years we deem it expedient to furnish this Formula of Intelligence for whom it may coucern.
Question 1st. What does a full Collegiate course in your Institute cost?
Answer. For particulars touching this course, please refer to page 349, the cost of which is $65.
Question 2d. Can I enter for the different courses separately, such as for Book- Keeping, at the price charged on page 341, Penmanship page 349, &c., &c., or am I obliged to enter for the entire course at once?
Answer. Gentlemen can enter for either of the courses separately, at the regu- lar charge; but it will be a great saving of time to the pupil, if he design to graduate, for him to enter for the full course at once, as each department is independent, and under the control of its respective Professor, with the hours of instruction so ar- ranged as not to conflict with each other, and thus enable the student to appropri- ate his entire time to business.
Question 3d. What time does it usually require to complete a course in Double. Entry Book-Keeping, or a full Collegiate course?
Answer. The time requisite to complete a full course in Double-Entry Book- Keepiug, by a young gentleman of industrious business habits, (and no others make Practical Accountants under any circumstances, ) writing a fair business hand, and competent to perform the ordinary calculations of an Accountant, will not exceed eight weeks, and many not require more than six; the instruction being imparted individually and not in classes, each gentleman having his respective desk, his pro- gress will therefore be commensurate with his capacity for receiving iustruction and his previous experience in business routine. A full Collegiate course will require about double this period.
Question 4th. When can I enter to the best advantage?
Answer. At one time just as well as another. THIS INSTITUTION IS IN PER- PETUAL SESSION.
Question 5th. What can Boarding be obtained at per month ?
Answer. From $10 to $15 per month ; good Boarding can at all times be obtained in private families at $12 per month.
Question 6th. What are the prospects for a situation, provided I am qualified for it?
Answer. A young gentleman of good moral character, of industrious business habits, and not too proud to work and willing to accept what offers, has never been known to be in want of a situation in this city; and no. young gentleman answering this description, fully qualified, has ever failed to receive a proper remuneration for his services-though all of this is independent of our contract as Teacher and Pupil. By that contract, we, parties of the first part, are firmly bound, and by these pres- ents, do covenant and agree to complete and in every respect qualify each and every Pupil to perform the duties of an Accountant in charge of the most complica- ted Books, or to sustain an examination before a Committee of Accountants of his own choosing-but no further. The Pupil, party of the second part, covenants and agrees to conform to the rules and regulations of the Institution, and to conse- crate his best efforts to the accomplishment of the objects for which he has been registered, during his entire course of instruction-but no further. Then this agree- ment to be in full force; but if otherwise, it shall be void. Thus the Teacher and Pupil are both free in all matters disconnected with instruction. This is as it should be. Our Pupils are our "FINGER BOARDS," and, as we have constant appli- catious for young gentlemen auswering to the above description, we are quite cer- tain to select such only as by their superior qualifications point to " JONES' COM- MERCIAL COLLEGE, Corner of Washington Avenue and Third Street.
N. B. Gentlemen wishing circulars or further information touching the above will please call at the office of the Institution, on the south-east corner of Washing- ton Avenue, and Third Street, or address JONATHAN JONES,
