REMARKS ON THE COURSE OF STUDY.
Believing that a true education, which is a proper develop ment of the mind, can only be obtained by diligent study and untiring industry, this institution will give thorough and sys- tematic instruction in all of the departments, "No royal road to learning" or cramming process will bo used, and students will be classified according to what they know and not by what they may have studied, and none will be permitted to pass to the advanced classes until they shall have completed the preliminary work.
A completion of the Grammar School course will give students such proficiency as will enable them to proceed advantageously with the studies of the High School, and at the same time it is believed that they are well adapted to tho wants of those who do not desire to enter on a more extended course of study. The High School course is full and compre- hensive and little inferior to most colleges, and students com. pleting it will be qualified to fill almost any position in life.
There are daily recitations in Latin throughout three years, and the number and variety of Latin and Greek selections from the ancient authors, including Caesar, Virgil, Cicero, Xenophon, etc., are considered a sufficient foundation for a thorough class ical scholarship.
The course in Chemistry includes qualitative analysis with actual work in the laboratory, and the classes in Chemistry and Natural Philosophy have access to a full line of chemical and philosophie apparatus; illustrations und experiments are per- formed before the class whenever the subject requires them. The study of astronomy and surveying, in addition to the text book, will include oral instruction on methods of calculations and observations, and a practical knowledge of the use of the instruments, such as the compass, theodolite, and telescope. It is the design to make the study of German of practical use to those who pursue it; particular attention is paid to a correct pronunciation; the grammar and idioms will be studied in con. nection with some text book, and will be followed by transla . tions, compositions, and conversations, the language being used as far as possible during recitations.
Catalogue of Spiccland Academy.
In addition to the class drill in Rhetoric, students aro required to have regular exercises in essay writing and recitation under the direction of the teachers of the different departments.
The work in English Literature is principally biographical, but particular attention is paid to direct students to such a course of reading as will secure a correet literary taste. This is greatly facilitated by the excellent libraries to which all the students have access.
COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT.
The course of study m this department is divided into three divisions-Theoretical, Junior and Semor- - and, with proper application, may be completed in from three to four months. In the Theoretical Division the student is instructed in Orthogra- phy, Pemmanship, Commercial Correspondence, Mathematics, and the elements of Bookkeeping, the forms and uses of busi- ness papers, such as Notes, Checks, Drafts, Bills of Exchange, Orders, Receipts, Bills of Lading, etc.
In the Junior or Practical Division, the student is furnished with a capital of cash, merchandise, real estate, etc., and then proceeds to actual work-buys and sells merchandise, makes deposits in bank, gives and receives notes, checks, drafts, re- ceipts, bills of exchange, acceptances, etc. Here the student becomes familiar with the various forms of Bookkeeping, such as apply to wholesale and retail merchandising, forwarding, commission, etc.
The Senior Division embraces thorough instruction in the subject of Banking aud in the various departments of Commer- cial Law.
Special attention is given to the settlement of partnerships, av- eraging accounts, etc.
Business Penmanship is taught daily throughout the Com- mercial Course, and those desiring it will be instructed ia Orna- mental Penmanship and Pen Drawing.
