SALEM. The seat of justice for Washington county, located on the L. N. A. & C. Ry, about 90 miles south of Indianapolis, contains 1,600 inhabitants, and has a bonded indebtedness of $3,500. The village is incorporated and contains three hotels. one bank, and two weekly newspapers, The Press (Republican), and the Democrat. Its religious and educa- tional wants are supplied by five churches- Catholic, Christian, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist-graded and private schools. Its manufactories consist of four flour mills, a stone quarry, planing mill, furniture fac- tory, a foundry, two tanneries, a woolen mill, three saw mills, one spoke factory, one brick yard, and a straw-cutter manu- factory.
