TERRE HAUTE. This beautiful and progressive city, now the third in Indi- ana in population and wealth, is most de- lightfully situated upon an elevation of some 60 feet on the east bank of the Wabash river, near the lower edge of Fort Harrison prairie, regarded as the finest in the county. The city has always been known as the beau- tiful " Prairie City of the West." It is the county seat of Vigo county, one of the richest agricultural counties in the State. The census of ISSo shows a population of 26,593. Its growth for the last 30 years has been steady and substantial. Its population in 1850 was only 4051; in 1860, 8594; in 1870, 16, 103, of whom 13,003 were natives of the United States and 3101 were foreign born. Its growth during the past ten years has exceeded that of any city in the state, and its prospects are most excellent.
