eral transportation facilities can be said to be hardly second to any inland city in the west, the Wabash river being navigable during the greater part of the year for light draft water craft, and there being ten railroads centering here. In consequence of its prox. imity to the block coal fields of Clay coun- ty, only 12 miles, and the rich beds of bi- tuminous coal all around it, making the price of that fuel only the cost of mining and delivering it, the city has developed in the past ten or twelve years into one of the most important manufacturing cities in the state, prominent among which is the iron and nail works, and car works, the Hud- nut hominy mills, which are the largest in the world. having a grinding capacity of 1000 barrels per day, and a storage capacity of 300,000 bushels, in addition to several foundries, mills, and other machine shops of various kinds.
Its educational facilities are very fine. The Indiana State Normal School, which is in a most prosperous condition, is located here. The Rose Polytechnic Institute, destined to take rank as the leading insti- tution of this kind in the United States, with an endowment of one-half a million dollars, all the work of one man, the late Chauncy Rose, is also located here. It has ten newspapers (of which three are dailies), and 31 churches.
In consequence of its porous soil, excel- lent drainage, and purity of atmosphere, it is regarded now as the healthiest city in the state, its mortuary list being less in propor- tion to population than any city in Indiana, no epidemic of any kind ever having visited the place. The Magnetic Artesian Well here is rapidly attracting the attention of invalids on account of the great curative qualities of its water. Express, Adams and American. N. Filbeck, postmaster.
