sketch. The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842, by the congregation of the Holy Cross, under the direction of the Very Rev. E. Sorin, and was chartered by the legislature of the state of Indiana in 1844, with full power to confer all usual degrees, and is now conducted by its President, Very Rev. William Corby, C. S. C. On April 23d, 1879, the University svas de- stroyed by fire. The style of the present building (which was erected in the sanie year that it was burned) is Modein Gothic, and presents a frontage of 224 feet and a depth of 155, with a projection or wing on each side directly connected with the main building, makes a total frontage of 320. The heighth of main building from the ground to the pedestal or statue above the dome is 170 feet. Its facilities for edu- cation are briefly stated, being calcula- ted to form both the heart and intellect of its students. The St. Marys Academy, under direction of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, is the best disciplined and most thorough institution of its class in the United States. The building, of brick with stone dressing, is spacious and commodious, and one of the best constructed for educa- tional purposes in the country. Situated on the St. Joseph river and surrounded by eighty acres of land laid out in fine plcas- ure grounds, make it at once most pleasant and inviting. The popularity of the insti- tution is shown by its patronage, as its list of pupils includes females from nearly ev- ery state in the Union. The proximity of Notre Dame and St. Mary's is a great con- venience to parents having children at both institutions, as a visit to both can be made at the same time. The University has a Western Union Telegraph and American Express office in the building. Mail is re- ceived daily. E. Sorin, postmaster.
