SULLIVAN. The capital of Sulli- van county is a thrifty, enterprising grow- ing village, located on the E. & T. H. R. R., 22 miles south of Terre Haute, and 98 southwest of Indianapolis. It was first set- tled by Enoch Walls, and laid out as a town in 1842, is incorporated and contains 2,500 inhabitants. The court house was erected in 1853, and its new addition built in 1871, and is within 100 yards of being in the direct centre of the county. The place has substantial business blocks, fine residences, a handsome opera house, and reliable, energetic business firms, prominent among which is the firm of John Davis & Sons, which are highly respected for their business qualities and integrity, having built up one of the largest hardware and general agricultural implement trades in Southern Indiana by their close attention to business. Sullivan contains six churches of different denominations, an excellent graded school of ten departments, three hotels, and two banks. The press is represented by three weekly newspapers, Democrat, True Demo. cracy and the Union. The city is surround- ed by a very fertile agricultural district, which is underlaid with a choice quality of block coal, and is destined to become a place of no unusual importance in the near future.
