REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN FOR THE YEAR 1945


The Selectmen submit the following report on the activities of their department for the year 1945.


There were held forty-six regular meetings, ten special meetings, several joint meetings and numerous conferences and public hearings.


The Board organized on' January 16th, 1945, with the election of Charles F. Holman as Chairman.

July 17 - Order of taking adopted and signed by the Selectmen for easement for drainage purposes from Oolah Avenue northerly to New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.


August 7 - Order of taking adopted and signed by the Selectmen for easement for drainage purposes from Endicott Street northeasterly.


October 2 - Order of taking adopted and signed by the Selectmen for easement for drainage purposes from Walpole Street northwesterly and northerly to Wilson Street.

November 6 - Order of taking adopted and signed by the Selectmen for easement for sewer purposes in Westborder Road between 1938 sewer easement and Gay Street.


Miscellaneous Licenses and Permits


From time to time on application therefor and report thereon licenses and permits were granted for various activities as permitted by law as follows, namely:


Common victuallers and transfers of same; Sunday amusements; pool rooms; bowling alleys; junk dealers; public amusements; roller skating rink; lodging houses; intelligence offices; fruit and vegetable stands; sales of frozen desserts, fruit, ice cream, confectionery; exchange of second hand motor vehicles and parts; taxicabs, business and private garages; keeping, storing and sale of volatile inflammable fluid, fuel oil, and other petroleum products, after hearings held, Class I, II, and III licenses for purchase and sale of second hand motor parts and vehicles.

Dances, carnivals, field days, public meetings, public street parades, conduct of poppy drives on street, tag days.


May 1 - Permit granted to Veterans' of Foreign Wars to sell poppies on the streets of Norwood on May 26th.


May 15 - Carnival permit granted to St. Peter's Society and the Polish National Alliance for June 20 to 23.


May 29 - Carnival permit granted to Norwood Emblem Club for June 13 and 14, and Norwood Lodge of Elks for June 15 and 16.


June 12 - Carnival permit granted to St. Catherine's Fife and Drum Corps for August 2nd and to the Holy Name Society for August 3 and 4.


July 17 - Parade permit granted to Loyal Order of Moose for Sunday, July 29, 1945. October 16 - One o'clock dance permit granted to the Bird Club of East Walpole for Friday, October 26th at the Junior High School.


December 18 - One o'clock dance permit granted to Workmen's Benefit Association on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1945, at Workmen's Hall, Wilson St., Norwood.
