REPORT OF TOWN CLERK
Discussion. of Need in Relation to Sites:
(9) The Nichols Street site, comprising 19 acres, is located between Nichols Street and Walpole Street, approximately opposite Westover Park- way. A school on this site could take care of all the future growth of this section of the town to the Walpole line. This area has a building potential of about 1200 units, the majority being in the Westover and Holmwood develop- ments.
To illustrate the present need, two circumstances are noteworthy. First, there are 38 pupils in grades 1 through 6 attending the Junior High Ele- mentary School Unit who would ordinarily be housed in the Winslow or West Schools. Second, despite this expediency, crowded conditions exist in the Winslow School.
Also, the westerly portion of the Shattuck School district is within walk- ing distance of this site which would enhance administrative flexibility. If in the future it is deemed advisable by the School Department to withdraw the Winslow and/or West Schools from service, a school on the Nichols Street site would cover the service areas of these units.
Considering the present need and exceptional building potential of this area, the construction of a new elementary school is considered wise on this site.
(10) The Prospect Street site, comprising 15 acres, is located just east of Pine Street and on the northerly side of Prospect Street.
At the present time there are in the Junior High School Elementary Unit 47 pupils who would ordinarly attend the Shattuck School. The enroll- ment situation in the Shattuck School is as crowded as is the case in the Winslow-West Schools.
From the standpoint of births, there have been more in this school district than in any other with the exception of the Callahan, for the years 1950 through 1955.
Finally, the building potential is considerable, amounting to 550 house lots in the Forbes Estate alone.
A school on this site would also permit withdrawal from service of the Shattuck School, if such action is considered proper by the School Depart- ment at a later date. Also, with the provision of suitable street cross-over facilities, pupils from the northerly end of the Callahan School district could attend a school on this site, thereby relieving attendance pressure on the Callahan School.
Considering the urgent present need and building activity of this area, the construction of a new elementary school is deemed advisable on this site.
(11) The Neponset Street site, comprising 9.3 acres, is located just south of Dean Street and on the westerly side of Neponset Street.
The steady growth of the Neponset Street area east of Route 1 com- mands close attention as a prospective school location. The increase in en- rollment in this area has been remarkably steady.
90
TOWN OF NORWOOD
Available house lots total about 300. The annual rate of new construction has been about 50 units per year. This indicates a steady growth which may possibly support a school for this area in the future.
However, the present school enrollment from this area, approximately 200 in grades 1 through 6, if housed in a new school built at this time, would lack administrative flexibility.
In addition to the factors above mentioned, this is an area from which all students are transported at public expense; therefore the situation war- rants frequent surveys in an effort to determine the nearest time when a school on the Neponset Street site will be economically and administratively feasible.
(12) The Hennessey Field site, comprising 12.4 acres, is located between Cross Street and Lenox Avenue, west of Pleasant Street.
This site is unsuitable for consideration as an elementary school site at this time. It is located at the intersection of the Balch and Callahan school districts. Its usefullness is further decreased by its proximity to the Boston-Providence Highway which cuts off the Neponset Street area from safe walking routes to such a school. The topography of this site suggests very high construction costs.
(13) A plot of land adjacent to Fr. McAleer Playground, 6.6 acres, in tax title and other land privately owned has been considered. It is the opinion of this Committee that this site has less merit than that of others already owned for school purposes on the westerly side of Washington Street.
First, time would be required to obtain clear title to the entire plot. Second, the normal school districts of a school built on this site would overlap considerably that of a school on the Nichols site and the Prospect Street site.
Respectfully submitted,
