REPORT OF THE ENGINEERS OF FIRE DEPARTMENT.
To the Selectmen of Randolph,
GENTLEMEN :- During the past year the engineers of the Fire Department have endeavored to reduce and keep as small as possible, the expense of the same ; and t is confidently believed that we have to some extent, succeeded.
AQUARIUS ENGINE, No. 1.
This Engine as before reported has been completely epaired, and painted, at an expense of $199,61, and with the hose, is in good order, with a company of 45 en. Capt. : JAMES W. WHITE.
INDEPENDENCE No. 2.
This Engine is in excellent order, with a company of 6 men, Capt. : EPHRAIM MANN.
RELIEF No. 4.
This Engine has been varnished the past year, and ith the hose, is in good order, with a company of 36 en. Capt. : A. J. BONNEY.

FIRE KING, No. 5.
This Engine has also been varnished. There is no company attached, many of the old members having been called to the army in the early part of the year. The hose has been thoroughly oiled, and with the En- gine is in good order.
There has been paid on Aquarius Engine, bills for 1860.
Steward and all other expense for the year, $30 13.
$246 97
Of the above amount there is unpaid $12 32.
On Independence Engine, all expense for one year, $13 66.
On Relief Engine, steward and other ex- penses for one year, including varnishing, $25 97.
On Fire King, expense including var- nishing and bill for repair of hose $44 03
$113 79
Refreshment at time of fire on Main street.
$31 44
FIRES DURING THE YEAR.
March. Unoccupied building known as the Joh: Maddan house.
Sept. 14. On Main street, consuming a manufactor occupied by T. E. Wortman, and two dwelling house Loss not ascertained ; partly insured. Also, nearly d stroying a dwelling house belonging to Mrs. Fuller ; i sured.
Nov. 28. Unoccupied dwelling house on West strec owned by Bernard Purcell.
There have also been two dwelling houses burned b longing to John Jones.
35
It will be seen that expenses of the Fire department have not been large, and with no more fires, there does not appear to be any necessity for their being very much increased the coming year.
With your permission we subjoin the following cx- tract from the General Statutes, chap. 24, Sec. 29 :
" The Board of Engineers shall have the care and su- perintendence of the public engines, hose, hooks, lad- ders, carriages, &c. together with the buildings, fixtures and appendages belonging thereto and shall cause the same to be kept in repair and when worn out to be re- placed," &c.
Respectfully submitted,
A. W. WHITCOMB, Chief Engineer.

REMARKS AND SUGGESTIONS OF THE
SELECTMEN.
The Selectmen, in concluding their annual report pre- sent the following suggestions for the consideration of the town, in relation to the appropriations for the ensu- ing year ;
In consequence of the general depression in business, and the probability of a large increase in the apportion- ment of the State tax, it is recommended that a reduction be made in the expense of each department in town affairs, so far as the public good and the general welfare of the town will allow.
ROADS.
The roads at the present time are in most cases in good condition, better than they will average in the towns throughout the State. It is proposed to reduce the sum usually raised, of $2,000 to $1,500 for the ensuing year, which if properly expended, will be sufficient to keep all roads in town in as good repair for the year as at the present time.
