The cash balance as shown in annexed account of receipts and expenditures is one hundred thirty dollars and nineteen cents ($130-19%). The income from the Hall has been about two hundred dollars ($200) less than for the preceding year ; and the investments in Bank Stock have been subjected, for the first time, to a tax of one hundred eighty dollars and seventeen cents ($180-17), the Statutes of 1871 imposing the same. The trustees have petitioned the Legislature that this sum may be refunded, with a reasonable prospect of success.
28
The school year of 1871 and 1872 opened on the 4th of April last. The daily attendance of pupils through the year was a small fraction over 50. The average number belonging to the school during the year was 52.33. The average at- tendance of the whole number of pupils belonging to the school for the year was a fraction more than 95 per cent.
The several classes, it is believed, have made commendable proficiency in their various studies. The examination exer- cises, on the 7th inst., are referred to with great satisfaction, the graduating class numbering 14, and being the largest class graduated for many years.
There are essential changes regarded as highly important to be made in the school, such as the introduction of new branches of study, etc., necessitating the employment of a competent female assistant, which the trustees are desirous of inaugurating. This cannot be done, without an additional appropriation by the town, which it is believed will be made with the greatest cheerfulness. So long as the Stetson School is made to answer the requirements of a High School, noth- ing can be fairer than that the town should pay its proportion of the additional expense. It is, therefore, most respectfully urged that the town for the ensuing year make an appropri- ation of five hundred dollars. This sum, in addition to the income of the Stetson School Fund, will enable the trustees to effect such changes and improvements in the school as will make it eminently practical and satisfactory as a High School, at which our girls may be properly educated without abridging the advantages of the boys, as provided for by the " honored donor " of the Fund.
As it regards the question of one or two daily sessions, the trustees have determined for the future to adopt the two ses- sion plan, believing such to be for the general interest of the school, as well as for the physical improvements of its pupils.
The ensuing school year will commence on Tuesday, Apr.
